New Atari Jaguar Pro Controller Review.

Hey all,

I received the new Pro Controllers by Hoskinson Industries and put together a video review for anyone who might be on the fence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB5e2TyWAvY&feature=youtu.be

For those not interested in the video here are a few key points.

- The controller feels like it's an original. It's of the highest quality, and though some might believe it's a bit expensive at $60USD, I think the quality and niche market justifies the cost.

- Games are much more enjoyable with the Pro Controller. There's no doubt that it's more precise than the original.

- The size is reduced making it a better fit for people who don't have massive hands.

- People who own and love their Jag should own one. You really are missing out by sticking with the Original.

Anyone else pick one up? If so, how do you like it?

Only $60? That sounds good to me, especially considering the exorbitant price originals go for. Don't know what the msrp was on the original pros, but it's not really out of line imo now days, if it's any where near the quality of the original it'll likely last you forever, or at least as long as your interest in the console.

Just wanted to say, in the video. The original pro is also thinner than the standard pad. It also looks like all the buttons are convex (hard to tell in the video) while the pro has concave abc buttons. If you can find one, it would be nice to see a side by side with the original pro.

Cool, good to know. They look like an exact match.

Yes, convex Z-X, and concave C-A (not sure why they went right to left ordering).

Maybe trying to copy nintendo? Never was sure why they went backwards with the marking. Though it I recall, the jp versions aren't marked at all (I like their snes pads colorful buttons)

Nice review. My pair are on the way.

One thing I've never understood is people complaining that the original Jag controller is uncomfortable to use? I've played 1000 of hours of AvP, Tempest, Doom and Rayman over the last 25 years and never once had an issue with the controller. Granted modern kit like the Playstation Dual Shock and X360 controllers are more ergonomic but the Jag controller is not as bad as people make out.

Maybe it's just me...?

I never saw jag pads as bad in any way, outside the stock pads mushy buttons, not game breaking or anything, I just prefer the more click feel of the pro. The jag was the first controller that actually attempted ergonomic in any meaningful way, and for its time, imo, it was the BEST controller anywhere. Yes it's been surpassed in recent years, but of 8/16 and early 32 bit era games, I still think it's the best. Still an personal opinion though.

I 'like' the original jaguar controller. I was pleasantly surprised when I first got my jaguar after years of wanting one. The controller was much better than I was expecting. The size suits me fine, they are comfortable and I find it vaguely amusing that I have to 'wrestle' with the d-pad a bit.

I am looking forward to my pro controller order arriving!

I'm in the boat of people not fond of the original controller. I've had this conversation with a ton of people and it really comes down to hand size. I'm not a real big guy and tend to prefer smaller controllers. All my larger friends love the original Jag controller (it's typically one of their favorites) along with the Xbox duke, etc. I personally find it difficult to discuss great controllers or take recommendations without knowing how large the person is who's giving the advice. For me, the Pro controller is a perfect fit and amazing controller (one of my favorites) while the original is a smidge too thick to be enjoyed.

The Opal looks tempting indeed but as I have two other rotary controllers already I think I need to wait for the pound to fall a bit more before succumbing.... ;)

The new Pro Controllers look and feel great. Just a couple of days after they arrived I found an old pro controller at a retro swap meet (while the guy selling it had rather high expectations for his loose carts most of which I already had, he either didn't know the controller he sold me for 40 Euros was special or he just wanted to get rid of his Jag stuff quickly).
