PAL system changer

I doubt there ever was a brown system changer.

The reason for the brown versions was that the white Intellivision II was available in the US but due to technical issues with the PAL video circuitry, the Intellivision II was delayed internationally. Thus the rest of the world still had the original brown Intellivisions. Making brown ECS and accessories was a simple color change.

However, the video input pin on the cartridge port was moved from Intellivision I to II. This means that the System Changer isn't compatible with the original Intellivision... unless you or Mattel modified the original console's internals (Mattel offered a mail-in service for the mod). Because of this incompatibility, its doubtful that there ever was a brown System Changer.

The question was asked here a number of years ago:
http://atariage.com/forums/topic/225896-brown-system-changer/

Like Lathe and Intymike have mentioned, the System Changer was made for the Intv II console. The Intv 2 consoles weren't made for the PAL market, so no brown Intv II consoles and no brown System Changers (not a PAL version of Intv 2 and System Changer needed to be brown). If they made a PAL Intv 2 console, do we know if they would have been brown?

The ECS and accessories were made brown since they are compatible with the original consoles and that is the color of the only consoles available in the PAL market.

At some point they released a modification to the original Intellivision consoles to support the System Changer shown here:
http://wiki.intellivision.us/index.php?title=Intellivision_System_Changer_Support_Modification

So you can modify an original Intellivision console to support the System Changer, I don't think this will work in the PAL environment since the System Changer is simply passing its video signal through the Inty console.

There were no PAL compatible System Changers made.

Now this brings up two questions I am too lazy to research:

  • If someone modified an original Intellivision PAL console for System Changer support, and connected the System Changer, what will happen?
  • Since the System Changer is simply an Atari clone, then what would it take to modify the System Changer to be PAL compliant? Could one remove the needed chip(s) from a PAL 2600 console and put them in the System Changer? Or would a completely new System Changer board need to be developed/made?

If you are able to make a PAL System Changer, and modify your original PAL console to work with your newly modified PAL System Changer, then you can re-color your new PAL System Changer like this:

I was going to re-colour the system changer to brown to match my TandyVision 1. Right now I have a TandyVision 1 with the brown PAL ECS plugged into it with the brown voice synthesizer plugged into the ECS. I want to add the system changer to the synthesizer to create a ridiculous daisy chain. Btw I have the 6 slot atari game brain plugged into the system so the end result would be a video game system that is 5 components wide. I love how it looks

I stand a bit corrected. I thought there was a PAL version _eventually_ released. Come to think of it, I've never seen one for sale on eBay and I most likely forgot the "... and finally killed..." part of Keith's site. ;-)

The Digiplay Intellivision II is a kind of PAL machine. But the Brazilian PAL is closer to NTSC than to PAL.

The big thing about a brown/PAL System Changer is that it would presumably output a PAL signal. While NTSC regions can use the brown Europe ECS, since it doesn't output a video signal, it just takes the signal from the master Intellivision, the PAL System Changer would only work when paired with a PAL Intellivision.

(Or, I suppose, if you had a dual NTSC/PAL television, you could switch video standards when using System Changer....)
