HSC Season 10 - Game 1/10 - DEMON ATTACK

I managed to nudge mine up a little bit. (7,343).

Incidentally, I always preferred playing this game on the Atari because of the controller, but I am beginning to see the merits of the disc in Demon Attack, at least. Using two hands to control the game gives you a decided advantage, I think.5befe4571a50624f52fcd6c9d8390744.jpg

I tried playing a few rounds, but since you set the game at the highest single-player difficulty, I just sucked at it.

After several tries, I got very lucky and got over 1,000 points, but it's just too frustrating, and I don't have the stamina nor the inclination to become an expert in every game. I guess I'm just not HSC material. :(

For the record, below are my entries for this Demon Attack on game #10 (CLEAR):

My first try at Demon Attack in years -- Boo!

My second try ... some progress!

On my third try I got very lucky!!!

After that, I just never could get anything over 600 points, and I tried for about an hour. :(

Thank you, Scalpel, for taking the reins and re-ignating the HSC, but I'm afraid I just can't play against such high-skill challengers. It's not really all that fun playing a game in its hardest difficulty if you seldom play it.

Good luck to all, and Godspeed!

To be honest, the only way I am even able to do this is by working myself into a kind of trance. I don't even look directly at the screen when I'm playing. I look past it, kind of like when you are trying to see those Magic Eye pictures. If I can get into a zone, it all sort of starts to fit together. I can't quite explain it. The way I got my latest score was by turning off the TV's sound and playing music in the background. It seemed to help a bit.

Anyway, I am a little sad to see you feel so disheartened, as I was genuinely excited to be participating in this with you. Christmas Carol is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen a fan pull off. It is so perfect it almost doesn't seem real.

Maybe the next game will play to your strengths a little more. (I'm assuming that everyone can participate in every round.) :-)

I think this is common with pattern type games. The best I ever did on Megamania was by using a similar technique. I didn't focus on any of the enemies, rather I just saw the pattern of the swarm as a whole. It all clicked; like being in the Matrix. I haven't been able to recreate it and had to resort to blunt practice and learning the patterns and safe spots. No such luck with Demon Attack, but fingers crossed.

I think the most frustrating thing about Demon Attack is how quickly you can lose 2-3 lives in a row. There's no grace period for spawning. If you press left or right immediately after you die, you'll respawn on the side of the screen instead of where you died.

Yeah, that killed me over and over, even when I thought I wasn't doing that bad. I tried playing at the "Advanced Normal" level and, although I didn't do much better points-wise, I did enjoy the game a lot more, for I felt like the pace was fairer. I don't mind posting a score of 50 when people posts 9K, just as long as it is fun to play and I enjoy it. I just couldn't this one. :(

I'm not bitter or anything, and I do admit that I suck at these games now (well, I've always sucked at them, I just try to forget it). I understand that the HSC is a competition and the challenge to the players is desirable, so playing the high difficulty levels as a matter of course is a good thing. You guys are all at a different league. :o

I just wish there was an HSC for wimps like me, were we could play Snafu and Frog Bog and Math Fun, or practice a round of Loco-Motion in the slowest setting (well, maybe not at the slowest setting).

I was also having a bad day, with work and other crap, and I thought that playing a video game would cheer me up. Well, Demon Attack at high speed just pissed me right off the edge of madness!

Sorry. I may give it another go by the week-end, I don't know. In any case, please don't nerf the HSC on the count of wimps like me, that's not the point. Go play and have fun and enjoy the challenge. :)
