So what about out-of-the-box, probably next to worthless ideas that would only have a "that's cool" appeal? Some of you guys must have at least one far-out idea you've never had the guts to mention in public. Well, I've got the balls to put mine 'out there'... here it goes. An FM radio card controlled by the TI with tuner and volume information displayed on the TI screen. There are FM radio IC chips floating around out there. With a little support circuitry, who knows? I'd hate to see the electric bill for running that, but it's pure awesomeness. Where do old drives go when they die? They don't go to heaven where the angels sigh. I had this in the works once upon a time... ...now the plan is for a VHF/UHF scanner for interface with radio and telecommunication systems. I Found an old realistic model for $10. ...$2 for 18 opto-coupler interface(to an existing controller). A DOLLAR STORE FM TUNER would be easier to interface. ...as for it coming in card(?) form... ...sounds like a big footprint for something simple, connection to the JOY or CASSETTE port sounds less resource consuming. Looks like that chip is an analog tuner and would be tough to integrate - but this one is meant for microcontroller control: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12938 It's I2C, so you'd either need to build an interface, but a slightly tweaked UberGROM with I2C enabled in place of the serial port would be able to talk to it trivially (that's really something I should just put into the firmware, if I get back to it.) It can even pick up the radio text that modern stations broadcast. The programming looks interesting. The only real sad part is that with the lack of an audio input on the cartridge port, we couldn't just make an FM radio cartridge. Omega-TI Posted December 4, 2018 Author Share Posted December 4, 2018 Yeah, a PEB radio card could be relatively small, keeping down the expense and only requiring an output jack on it for a set of speakers, or maybe even a Bluetooth chip. I would 100% be a +1 for one of these. Not only would it encourage me to turn on my TI more often, I'd probably use it more for other things once it was turned on. I was obsessively aggressive in my quest to re-obtain one, even then it took me an entire year. If it were not for Gazoo, who knows how long it would have taken. Seriously though, considering how small the one was that the guy was developing, and all the stuff being done these days with surface mount FPGA stuff, I'm really surprised no one has come out with a modern day "DOUBLE TECH CARD". Speech and RTC only, there's really not much need for a 64K PIO printer buffer these days. Now those two items would be awesome together, so if someone needed a project, that might be an interesting one.
