electronizer
I finally got a chance to try again with the internal Atari Tax demo disks I found some time ago. With help from bob1200xl and a borrowed 800, I was able to get the disk to boot and we analyzed it. Looks like they moved the VTOC—there are a bunch of bad sectors where it should have been. We copied over the good sectors to another disk—here's the atr file: HTDemo2.atr Anyone want to try to crack this? Just in time for tax season, though I think there may have been one or two small changes to the tax laws since 1983...
_The Doctor__
hmmm, maybe a vapi or atx / pro image might be useful...
phaeron
I'm not sure there's even a filesystem on this disk. The boot process doesn't install a D: device and isn't loading a directory, it's just burst loading sectors into contiguous memory. No metadata that I can see like sector links. Is there anything that actually needs cracking here? It seems perfectly willing to print a somewhat amusing sample tax return. Also, I don't remember ever getting an income tax package from the IRS with a peel-off sticker....
scotty
Interesting.... Being that the tax laws change so much every year, I am not sure how useful this would be in 2018, but still, another lost piece of software found and archived for history.

scotty
I can't get it to work in Altirra 3.20.6. It says corrupt or unsupported every time. I am using 3.20.6 and it works fine. Nothing special, XL/XE rom... It is a boot disk. When I take a directory using MyDos 4.53, I just get Dos and Dup. They are different sizes than the Dos and Dup from MyDos, but when I try it in Dos 2.5, I notice they are the same size. 37 and 42 respectively. Kyle22
I'll try it again and check my settings. I'll also try it on real hardware.
+DrVenkman
Yeah, the ATR works fine in Altirra for me, even with my (simulated) 1088XEL. Looks like this was a teaching/learning tool moreso than actual tax prep software.
