I found this yesterday, check out the original Gameboy Japanese box "HANDY Game Machine" :-D Is that a little wink from Nintendo to Epyx/Atari? Or perhaps even a small middle finger if the story is true that Epyx tried to hard-sell the Handy to Nintendo and went out of line? :P :grin:

My guess is just an accidental coincidence, but I don't know which of the many English meanings of "handy" would translate in Japanese.

"Handy" in Japanese is Japanese-made English, and typically means "handheld" or "portable."  For example, a lot of companies release products called "handy scanners" or whatever which would mean "handheld scanners."
