VicViper
Is this just a sign of bad/dirty contact connection, or a sign of a more serious problem? I've been cleaning the contacts and am still running into this problem, seemingly more than i would expect.
+DamonicFury
In my experience, its usually just dirty cart contacts. If its coming up a lot, maybe try cleaning the cart slot itself.

VicViper
Still can't get countermeasure to start. Titles mispelled, doesn't start. Hope it's just the cart.
bikeguychicago
I've actually had a few carts that either didn't work -- despite how much I cleaned it -- or stopped working altogether. So it is possible for the cart itself to be at fault. Edited December 16, 2018 by bikeguychicago

+DamonicFury
Glad you got a working Coutermeasure! Bikeguychicago is right... sometimes you just get a bum cart. Usually it's Activision carts for the 5200, but I've had Atari ones fail too... thankfully, most of them are really cheap to replace! Like you say, it could be that the failure rate for 5200 carts is slightly higher than for the 2600, INTV, CV, but if so, it's only very slightly... generally speaking, these 30+ year old carts are doing pretty well! +Cafeman
Try sticking a piece of cardboard or folded paper wad behind the cart that gives you trouble, see if that helps. That is my usual fix for Activision carts, but the Atari carts usually fit nice and snug in the slot, but it's worth a try.
