600XL with factory installed 64K - does anyone own this??

Glad to see that there are still many Atari users out there!!!

Just got a question regarding the 600XL. I owned pretty much all the models of the Atari 8 bit, and I remember the 600XL only had 16K standard and was expandable with some third party add-ons.

Years ago, probably around 1983 or 1984 I got myself an Atari 600XL with factory installed 64K. I pretty sure it was about the time when Atari was dumping the XL line for the new XE. No, it wasn't an add-on, or third-party upgrade..it was out of the box 64K, I even still own the computer with box. It had a sticker on it that said it had 64K built in, and it was Atari.

Does anyone remember this? Is this a rare item???

The box is the same standard 600XL box from Atari, the only difference is there is a star shaped foil sticker on the box that reads: "Now with a full 64K Memory built in" with "Atari" printed multiple times around the foil.

As soon as I can get a picture, i'll post it here if people are interested in seeing it.

yes, I think they were clearing out the excess 600XL inventory and decided to make them all 64K. I found it interesting because I have not seen a single mention of the 64K Factory 600XL on any Atari related Web site. I think I purchased this one to replace my 600XL with 16K in late 1984 or early 1985. I think it was just before the XE and ST line was introduced, so the XLs were on there way out.

I suspect that this was manufactured in the Warner era for two reasons:

1. It wouldn't seem like Tramiel to upgrade the 600XL - wouldn't he just liquidate remaining inventory? This sounds like a cost-ineffective Warner move.

2. The sticker does not have the Atari logo on it. Tramiel moved the Atari logo down and beside the name (like so: /|ATARI ), but the Atari sticker has the older Atari badging without a logo beside.

So it appears this could have been a Warner era thing. But who knows... just my speculation! An interesting product none-the-less.

Cheers!

Joey
