Francois Bertrand - Fight For Life & Virtua Fighter (Atari) – Interview

Adriano Arcade

Recommended Posts

In the latest Atari Jaguar based interview for Arcade Attack, I am delighted to introduce my lovely chat with Fight for Life legend Francois Bertrand! He also worked for SEGA and the legendary Virtua Fighter!

I ask him about his career at SEGA and Atari and get all the gossip on how the underrated (but admittingly rushed) Fight For Life was made (just!). Plus more on his stellar career.

Thanks for that, I was curious about him.

Any pics of what he looked like then and now?

I assume he is not the "Vampire of Montparnasse," though I suppose one never really knows.

I hope he isn't a vampire!!! Crikey!!! Sadly, he didn't pass on any images for me to use. But he was great to work with and obviously a true legend! Glad you enjoyed!

Very interesting interview. He is a legend of game design. Thanks for posting.

I liked the idea of customisation in FFL, original at the time. If Atari had given more time and funds I'm sure it could have been more polished. The problem was that by the time it came out we had Tekken and that blew it out of the water.

I actually sold my copy of FFL after playing Tekken 2...an act which I now regret.

☺ I had Pitfall 3D for a good while on Playstation, but been so long since i played it, i honestly cannot remember much about it...it clearly didn't have the lasting impression the original did.

It was also nice to hear the exact role this guy had on Virtua Fighter (Camera and collision detection) as a lot was made of his being part of the team behind it when F.F.L started getting talked about in the press, but back then they never went onto explain just what parts of it he had been responsible for.
