Hi someone knows if possible/how to upgrade the ram on the Atari 800 to get it compatible to the Atari 800 XL 64k ?

Maybe some product that is for sale ?, or a hardware hack ?.

:D

You would need an Incognito, which are very rare, or an Incognito 2, which isn't for sale yet.

An 800XL would be cheaper and easier. :-)

Thanks for the reply, yes i know the 800xl it's the easy option but the 800 look so cool :D.

I was thinking it could be not so hard to upgrade the memory its a shame theres no addon board to purchase for it.

The Incognito personality and memory, etc., etc., board proves it is possible to get XL compatibility, but no, currently there is no board available for purchase. I am currently involved in doing my own DIY upgrade for possibly some compatibility, in the end I may end up with a real XL OS on-board the personality board, but in any case it isn't easy, it is hard.

The upgrade I am doing is still theory, but done by the man who is also possibly looking into doing a new board similar to the Incognito in at least memory and OS, so there may be more than just an Incognito (if you can find one) or Incognito 2 to choose from in the future.

My experiment is just something I'm trying until another fully compatible board like Incognito comes along. Unless, of course my endeavors are successful and possibly expand to full XL compatibility on my own. But it comes down to not just adding more memory, but changing the OS personality board as well, to get XL compatibility, like the Incognito. If things go awry, it's a lot easier to find replacement OS personality boards and memory boards than an Incognito. ;) Several are on ebay right now.

There are quite a few threads here dealing with 800 memory upgrades, both Axlon type, and those that use XL memory mapping instead of Axlon, but still just theory except for Incognito. Just do a search for 800 memory upgrade and most or all the different threads should come up.

Here, you can have a little taste, while you prepare U.S. $250 to $300 to convince an existing Incognito owner to sell his board:

As an owner of twin 800XLs and 800-i, no doubt the 800 is the real McCoy, in that group.

I love my upgraded 1200XL, everything about it before and what I've done to it, but I still have to agree, the 800 is still the real McCoy between them and it will probably move from secondary to primary once I get it upgraded. The only thing I don't like about the 800 is the side mounted power, monitor and SIO.

I seem to recall the possibility of an 'Incognito lite' being discussed a few years ago. A very basic upgrade providing only XL compatibility and 64k or 128k of RAM without a SIDE loader or all the other bells and whistles. I can't find the thread now. Anyone know what became of this?

it was being discussed just in the last month, whether or not it was discussed a couple years ago. ClausB said he might look into it this winter. That's what I was referring too above, in post #4, I just didn't mention his name or call it "incognito lite." I did call it that in another thread I'm referring too the "discussion" within the last month when I (re?) suggested just such a thing. ;)

The one I'm remembering was a few (3-5?) years ago and was a gauge-of-interest type of thread posted by someone actually planning on producing them for sale, asking what minimum memory and feature set potential buyers would want.

I found the thread I'm referring too: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/242691-atari-800-256kb-upgrade/page-2

Post 49 and 50. "Discussed" might be too strong a word, maybe suggested and answered fits better...

Yes, I think I vaguely remember something like that, as I'd been keeping up with Incognito talks somewhat, but I didn't have an 800 at the time. I intended to wait on obtaining an Incognito or something similar and then get an 800, but I was given an 800 as a present around Thanksgiving, though I consider it an early Christmas present. So now I've decided to DIY upgrade(s) until Incognito 2 or "lite" come along, if I feel I still need one after my DIY attempts. I've already done several upgrades to her, one of which can be seen in my Avatar, though the LED under-lighting are not really an upgrade, just aesthetically modded...the keyboard too, though you can't really see that in the Avatar pics.

Is it possible that any of these theoretical projects might be compatible with a 400? To my mind, the 400 with its membrane keyboard is just such a fantastic looking, classicly styled machine. I have always been an XL kind of guy but I would love to get an Incognito-type 400 some day.

I would think that ClausB's 62K/64K board upgrade would work, since it uses a 400 48K memory board to start with. I'm just taking the harder route and combining a 16K board to a 48K board upgrade and the 48K board upgrade to 62/64K or possibly more. I'd say you could do that with a 400 as well. I'm basically combining two of Claus' upgrades. Though the 16K-48K is a proven upgrade, the 48K-62K(+2K for I/O so really 64K like XL's) upgrade is only on "paper." But does the 400 have a OS personality board like the 800 or is it on the motherboard? Not that it would matter as far as working, just more wiring on the mobo instead of an OS board.

Upgrading a 400 with the same upgrade might have even been discussed in these same threads, I don't recall. Of course ClausB is the expert that designs them, so he can tell you for sure.

This was floated by candle early on too...
