Bitt Boy handheld for NES, Gameboy, GBC

I bought one of these from www.retromimi.com :

https://obscurehandhelds.com/2018/12/the-new-bittboy/

It cost $40 US plus shipping, and took 12 days to arrive. I've spent an hour so far playing a few different games. I find the emulation is decent, controls are okay but a bit cramped during to the small size of the unit, sound is tinny but okay.

The emulation quality seems to be not bad. Overall if you're looking for a small handheld that plays NES and GBC/Gameboy, you might want to check this out.

Yeah, I think BittBoy is a little better ... and the microSD card slot makes all the difference. I have way too many things like this.

Can I assume the screen is the wrong ratio for one of the sets of games?

Of course! And that frameskip will break something you like while running other things perfectly.

Same thing right?

Edit...hmm...not the same it seem. Same form factor, lots of same games. That thing has more features I think.

Yes, like a microSD slot, emulation for GB and GBC, adjustable display ratio, save game states...

It's not perfect, but for $40 and easily fits in your pocket it's decent.

I'm curious, the older ones like those annoyingly had B/A button function swapped over the original style we're used to in the games. Is this corrected?

I don't care about the audio so much as you said it's ok but maybe a bit tinny, that's fine. I'm more curious if it had slow down problems at all with any of the 3 emulated systems? Also how far along does the NES emulator go? Can it do the exotic Japanese stuff like Castlevania 3 JP (VRC6) or the various Namco chips most the ghetto devices fail to do? As cheap as it is, it's a tempting thing to pocket as I've got spare mini cards that'll fit and the files to set it up too, so it's more a matter of accuracy at this rate.

I'm not a Nintendo fanboy or a purist, so it's hard for me to answer. I've tried maybe a dozen games on all three platforms and I have not noticed any issues - but I didn't play any NES back in the day. I did play GB and GBC quite a bit, and I haven't noticed any slow down issues.

If you want to know, I'd recommend looking at YouTube for reviews of BittBoy, and make sure to filter your search for just the last month so you are seeing only this newest version.

I'm not one of those go-to PSP types either. I'm about as tired of hearing people run to that as the Pi gestapo crusading on about that kit. They're more expensive acquired tastes with their own set of limits too. We're just talking a $40 closed up handheld as far as what systems work, and that's pretty cheap. The old bittboy for NES I think I recall complaining was a bit slow sometimes on NES stuff. That's why i asked, because the NES is weaker than either model of Gameboy so it was a concern.

I have a soft-modded PSP also. It's great, but it's a _lot_ larger and heavier.

Agreed but, it has a larger display, has bumper buttons for SNES games, and will even play N64 games to a point (with out audio they run great). SNES and NES games are flawless but, you can also add other emulators...(Sega systems as well as others)

PSP is a great handheld for hacking for emulators and the display is awesome on it. My only Meh about it is a clunky interface. You have the PSP menu that you have to select your emulator and they all look different. It's not a standard interface. That would be my only down side to it..

Best thing... If you shop around the used market, you could find a PSP with a power cord for $20-30 easy...

I've got a PSP that I've got some emulators and such on. It's nice... the screen is great... but the battery life sucks. It's the older 1000 model and I know a new battery would fix most of my issues, but this still looks interesting... Especially after seeing Yakumo1975's video. It might be nice for trips, but I feel that it'd be a little limited by lack of buttons... I mean, it doesn't have shoulder buttons, does it? Looks like it has trouble with SNES games (or maybe it's just the emulator used), but with no shoulder buttons, how many games are you going to have to skip? It's something I'd have to look further into...

I've just released a review video on the New Bittboy that plays a lot more than just Gameboy stuff.

Oh sweet. I never bothered to think outside what was offered. Same firmware?

I see that there's a 2nd version that uses what looks like Dingoo firmware, and they're available on AliExpress for $35 shipped (plus weeks of waiting) or $60 on Amazon for quick shipping. At that price, I don't mind splashing out for another one. It's a cute form factor with a good screen. I wish the D-pad weren't quite so squeaky but it's easier to run than faffing around with custom firmware loaders and ancient PSP batteries.
