APE Warp+ OS Upgrade?

Recommended Posts

What do people think of this mod:

It looks like this would be a great thing to have for your Atari XL/XE. It has special features like four selectable OS's, high speed SIO, cold boot w/o turning off your computer, boot with Basic only if you hold Option key. Also, one of the selectable OS's is an Atari 800 compatible OS, so there's no need for a translator disk.

I just wanted to get people's thoughts on this mod. I would like to get it eventually myself. It goes for $49.99 for a kit, or for $79.99 for full installation (this price also includes return shipping).

I have it in my 130XE and its great - being able to switch between 800 and XE OS's make life alot easier - The fast speed DOS stuff only works with select drives and SIO2PC cable so I wouldnt buy it for that.

Im very happy with mine

Very cool! I'm actually getting my first 800XL and an SIO2PC cable shortly, so this mod is looking very attractive to me. Did you install it yourself or did you send away for the full installation? If you did it yourself, was it difficult? If you sent away for full installation, how long did it take for you to get your machine back?

IM not very good at soldering so I sent it out - Steve returned it very quickly IIRC.

The only 'issue' I had was the toggle switches werent labeled so I had to figure out what the settings were (ie, both up = warp os, both down - 800 OS) - Its run fine for 2+ years :)

I have one--it's brilliant. I got mine about 3 years ago, and installed it myself. Not difficult at all if you have soldering skills and patience.

If your existing OS ROM is socketed, then the installation takes MINUTES. If it is soldered onto the motherboard (like mine was), then you will end up disassembling your computer completely to desolder the OS chip.

When you use it with APE, the I/O is blazing fast. Switch into "800" mode and throw away your Translator!

One snag though: the "800 compatible" OS does not really turn your XL into a true 800. I've found a (very) few games that just do NOT work correctly unless you run them on a REAL 800. Some hardware differences cannot be overcome with an OS retrofit.

Anyway, well worth the asking price. If you plan to use SIO2PC, buy the APE software at the same time. It's a genius piece of software! The new version has SIO2PC auto-detect, and works great in WinXP.
