toddtmw
Hi. I got some disks when I bought another auction and wanted to know if there was interest in trying to image any of these. I haven't even tried to put them in a drive yet. Many of them did not come with sleeves, so I do not know what shape the media is in. I haven't really imaged anything for posterity yet. Not sure if I can justify the epense of buying the hardware to ATX these. Would ATR's be enough? Of the disks I got, these do not appear to be in Farb's archive. Please let me know if there is any interest in any of these. Also, some of them, I'm not even sure what they are, so if anyone has any information on any of these, it would be great if you could share. (The two Antic Disks and the Funlwriter disk in particular.) Thanks!
+Allan
Yes, please archive them. The two Antic disks and possible a couple of others won't have copy-protection so you can at least make ATRs of them. Ironically I just scanned the manual for Aliencounter this morning. _The Doctor__
please blow them out with an aero duster before using them (top side and bottom side), also spin the disk disk media by its hub while holding the jacket before putting them in a drive. try to archive them before checking if they play. sometimes old disks are good for just one use and making an archive first means you still have a working copy if it all goes to pot. always clean the heads and let them dry before and after using old/auction disks your mission should you choose to accept it is to scp or kryoflux said disks or get them to someone who can... this disk will self destruct.... well we hope they won't remember if you can't be found while handsome at least be found handy !! lol Edited February 25, 2019 by _The Doctor__
toddtmw
Thanks for the advice. What is the best non-Kryoflux tool to use for backups? I have lothareks SIO to USB adapter. Thank you.

+DrVenkman
Thanks for the advice. What is the best non-Kryoflux tool to use for backups? I have lothareks SIO to USB adapter. Thank you. Use a good sector copier (I like Disk Wizard II but there are lots of options) - I would configure my floppy as D2:, boot my Atari from RespeQt with a sector copier in the D1: slot. Once the sector copier is running, tell it to use D2: as the source and D1: as the target. Eject the sector copier from the D1: slot in RespeQt and create a new blank image there. Once the ATR is created by the sector copier, be sure to save it with a good descriptive name.

Fred_M
Ofcourse a8preservation is very interested in dumps of these disks! I don't know if these are already dumped, these titles are certainly not in my stack of disks, but a8preservation is about checking the disks too. Only this way we can make sure that the dumps which are already available were made with original disks.
+DjayBee
Regarding the fact that each missing sector (for protection or due to bit-rot) will have the drive recalibrate to track #0 will create a high load on the floppie's surface and the drive: If you own a disk drive with an enhancement that allows to copy protected disks then it might be a good idea to first use this drive to create copies of the original disks. And then using Disk Wizard II from Allan create the ATRs from these copies you made. _The Doctor__
I am certain if you wish any number of preservationists will make scp and or kryoflux dumps for you. Whoever might be nearest to OHIO? Can you help as mailing magnetic media can sometimes be problematic these days? There is also the ape Prosystem ATR/ATX route. Vapi (though it's an abandoned method, I still have the .dll installed in ape for fun) It can help to have modified drives. Hope this works out with a good outcome. Farb
There are definitely some interesting titles there. Would love to get flux dumps of them. As mentioned, Kevin could do it or pheonix on the forum as well. Please don't try to run that Drelbs disk through a drive to make an ATR! We have multiple examples of Synapse titles practically self destructing. You may only get one chance with some of these! toddtmw
At this time, I cannot justify (much less actually find) hardware to properly preserve these disks. If someone is willing to do cryoflux dumps of these (and other disks I have) and share with the preservation society I will gladly send these to them it they promise to post the dumps and if they sell them, use the money to buy more disks to preserve. I want evidence that you can do this, along with evidence that you are prepared to keep the preservation alive. It would be awesome if they were in the Cincinnati area so I could present the disks in person rather than sending them. Thank you.

+Allan
Does anybody in Ohio have a Kryoflux. By the way, the first three are not copy-protected, so if you have an Atari drive you can copy them. If you don't have an SIO2PC device you could send the copy's of the disks to one of us and we can get them onto the Net. If you need blank disks, I can send you some. Just let me know. Allan I copied one of the Antic disks an it went pretty well, but then I tried the other one and it had bad sectors, so then I as thinking that Kryoflux would be better overall because it would get the best copy of the disk it could and then maybe it could be repaired, so I didn't do any more. I guess no one has one in the Cincinnati Area. If someone at least in the US can PM me, I can arrange to send them. I also just bought some disks from Goodwill, so I will wait until those arrive and send those too. Thank you.

+Nezgar
Yep, if you are copying / imaging disks, it's pretty much required to clean the r/w head between each disk. (qtip / isopropyl alcohol) I usually keep the top cover off the drive for that purpose when doing this.
toddtmw
I just ordered a Kryoflux. Can someone share some model numbers of drives that work with it? Thanks.
+Allan
There were probably tons of manufactures of 5 1/4 PC drives. Most would probably work except for the 'Flippy disk' issue which requires a particular drive or a modification of a standard drive. Just try to get a working drive, which is probably the biggest challenge. I don't have mine here so I can't tell you which one I have unfortunately. Farb
I just ordered a Kryoflux. Can someone share some model numbers of drives that work with it? Take a look on our site here: http://a8preservation.com/#/guides/diskDumping Under "Kryoflux and SuperCard Pro" you will see the current list of drives we have successfully used. I won't copy them here so the information doesn't get out of date. Oh, and if you need a flippy modified drive to image double-sided disks, I can connect you with someone that sells them. They are a little pricey but come tested, calibrated and ready to go. Just shoot me a PM if interested. Hopefully It will all work and I will have what I need. How comlpex is the flippy drive mod? Can I archive the back of disks by punching a hole in the disk jacket? Thanks!
