HSC16 Round 4: Zylon's Mixed Bag

Recommended Posts

Caverns of Callisto: 17,650

Carnival: 6,480

Has anyone figured out how Caverns of Callisto works yet? It seems like there is a lot more going on that I don't completely understand yet. There are a couple of pick-up items. One refills your energy. One seems like a collectible of some sort - picking it up decreases the count of 8 blobs on the left by one.

There is also a key on the other side of some sort of laser shooting creature. If you carry it to a spot elsewhere in the level that looks like a dead end and touch the wall (to the right), it opens up into an entirely new level with different monsters, falling stalactites, etc.

Also, touching the blue pools will give you a shield that lasts for a few hits. You can continuously recharge it at the blue pools.

The red pools are bad, though. They shoot out lava.

 You've got a lot further than I did, did you map out the first cavern or just get lucky?! I'm going to play this more, shame the firing is so awkward to aim and there's not much visibility and the creatures randomly spawn when scrolled off... but I still quite like it !

We have to consider Origin systems did Ultima so there is a good chance there's more game here than first appears...

[off to look]

... The box on atarimania has green text and I can't read it but the advert tells us that it's 5 levels and an "adventure" :)

Found this: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/caverns-of-callisto-7lm

and this https://www.mobygames.com/game/caverns-of-callisto

So we have one "Big Game" here too keep us busy with the others mainly quick plays :)

I just got lucky, but as I recall the part of the wall that opens is not far from where I picked up the key.

Aha! Take a look at this page:

http://www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/category/caverns-of-callisto/

This person has posted the instructions in PDF format. (Click the brown image that says "Enter Here".) There are also scans of the original disk and a map that came in the game box.

The instructions look to be for the Apple II version, but I'd say they apply to the Atari version as well. The only exception is that I think you double tap the fire button to turn since there is only one button.

Also, BEWARE OF SPOILERS: He seems to have an annotated map that shows where all the ship parts, fuel tanks, keys, and other items are located. So if you want to figure this out on your own, DON'T scroll past the section titled "Caverns of Callisto scans".

The meter shows how much energy is left in the core, once it's at zero it explodes

 In which case it's a well programmed game, though the aliens could be programmed to come after you more if you stand still for too long - I was wating up and diagonal behind the shield things and gettting a few shots in, the aliens never got to me.

Improvements

Alpha Shield 103,975 (20) this gets very tricky!

Carnival 12,915 (7) - played again but didn't improve - hard to get the pipe bonuses so I concentrated on the bonus bonus ;-)

Caverns Of Callisto 15,050 - opened the secret wall and explored the 2nd level - you don't need to get all the thingys to do this - looks like different graphic features on each level, shame it's so scatty moving/firing

Collision Course 50,470

Crab Nebula 10,055 (6)

Escape 108 - nice example of simple BASIC game with a Player Missile graphic and collisions with playfields.

I didn't work out the pipe bonus in Carnival, how are you supposed to get it? Are you supposed to hit those things at the top first?

I finished Lode Runner, it only took me 36 years :), before I know I will be moving onto Atari ST/Amiga games and then mayby some early MS DOS stuff.

1,403,375

Level 152

The Guards are quicker from level 151 onwards. Basically a loop of 150 levels.

I'll leave there :-)

You've got a lot more patience than I have, 150 screens! It's nice to finish a game that you like, congratulations on your achievement!

Looks like the Pipe bonus is a temptation at the start, if you can shoot them cleanly - the danger is you hit a BONUS letter and mess that up. You can use them as a fall back if you mess up BONUS before you have shot so many things that PIPE is 0. I've been racking up as many points for the BONUS and then getting the BONUS letters at the end - not always successfully as usually I've accidentally shot one. Good game

Trbb - this version Escape will be ok?attachicon.gifEscape (1984)(Virgin Books)(GB).xex

Yes, any version that works - the basic game plays fine too

More Carnival 29,820 level 20 ran out of lead. Also had the no bullets bug, seems if you run out the game has problems and needs a reload, maybe there is a fixed version out there?
