Atari 1064

Mybe because I never owned a 600XL that I hadn't heard of an Atari 1064, according to what I've read it's

a Parallel Port interface that also gives the 600XL an extra 64K of memory.

 

I found out about this due to an ebay listing as one of the items.

I've used Atari Computers since the early 80's and it still amazes me that I still seem to know so little but happy to keep learning

It's just a 64K RAM add-on with a parallel pass-thru, but a cute device nonetheless and I believe the only consumer PBI device Atari ever produced for the A8.

I was lucky enough to get one with a 600xl a few years ago

I wonder - if you connect a second one does it disable the Ram in the first one and use the Ram from #2 ?

Though I suspect propogation delays might creep in and make the whole thing fall down.

2x 1064 to turn something Iike a 130XE I think have read it in another thread that isn't possible/will not work though here back then haven't seen one nor anyone with it (even I don't remember of a single 600XL at the stores)...

 

P.s.- Also 1x 1064 on an 800XL also doesn't do nothing, right?

From what I read, it won't fit an 800XL, apparently the port connecor doesn't fit (by design).

 

It also said it gave an extra 64K of memory, so 80K in total.

The 1064's RAM completely supplants the internal 16K, so it's 64K total.

 

I believe the device will block the monitor jack on an 800XL.

800XL doesn't have the +5V power required by default but otherwise I would guess it'd work - just as 320XL and some other external upgrades can be configured to replace system Ram.

My introduction to the Atari 8-bit line was a friend’s 600XL with the 1064 expansion. I thought it ruined the aesthetics of the computer (which is why I bought an 800XL later).

I got a 600XL a couple years back and performed the internal RAM upgrade some months back. The 600XL has new found appeal for me now.
