5200 HSC Season 12 Round 5 - Koffi: Yellow Kopter

Recommended Posts

Welcome to round five of this 5200 HSC season! Koffi (a fantastic creation of our own Cafeman) won the poll with 4 votes. As per his recommendation, we will play on Normal difficulty (not the default Easy setting.) Emulation is fine, as are custom controls. Pics preferred, but not required except for HSC wins and records.

The current HSC record for Koffi at Normal was set by ...um... Cafeman - 84,920 points. Bust it if you can for a bonus point!

Also, a bonus participation point shall be given if you can activate the Easter Egg and take a picture of it. See the programmer's tips on how to do this: http://cafeman.www9.50megs.com/atari/5200dev/KoffiSecrets.html

A link to the ROM can be found here:

Here is an introductory video I made years back. I am the one playing, it might help those who get confused by the gameplay.

And here is a fellow playing on Easy, submitting a Twin Galaxy high score. (Much lower than the AA 5200 HSC Easy high score of 700k+ !)

Note that his method in Pyros Mom is not taking advantage of getting PM's lightning to hit the Chaser, which stuns PM for a few moments.

Thanks for the links, can't play until I get back from a trip, but I will look at these when I have the chance.

Good to know...I thought I was doing something wrong so I would change the EASY back to NORMAL before taking my screenshot. I knew I was playing on the right setting, but it always threw doubt into my mind.

It probably resets to default , which is Easy. Sorry, the programmer should have retained your setting. :o

Just play on Normal and we should ignore seeing Easy on the title screen.. Honor System.

Or just take the picture during the credits music, then you don't have to worry about it resetting and posting the setting as easy, even though you played on Normal.

Boy I hope somebody beats my old score this time. You'll have to get to level 6 at least to get that high, if memory serves. Scoring tips are: rescuing every animal you can; of course beating Pyro and Pyros Mom; but also keeping the fire at bay to the first 7 or 8 rows of fire pixels which gives you a tree bonus of 500. Next level is 250, decreasing etc etc.

Also, I think a bonus participation point should be given if you can activate the secret, which puts the programmers initials in the trees. You don't have to do it on the same round as your high score game, in fact it's easier to pull it off on Easy difficulty due to its slower fire spread. Some tips are on this page:

11130. Normal mode. I struggle with precise control of Koffi. With the stock controllers, I keep dropping down into the fire when going to put out. With a thumbstick, I do better, but still don't feel I have precise control. Hopefully one of those things that just gets with practice. I've played this before, but didn't really know what I was doing, it helps to RTFM. It's really unique, and I mean that in a good way.

14685. Yeah, just need some practice, stock controller is best for me. Works great, just need to train the hand not to run down into the fire. I couldn't quite pull off the "best" way to take care of Pyro's mom according to Cafeman, but got past her, on level 2.

The collision detection pushes Koffi downwards. Thus, you need to press up to nail Pyro, expecting it will knock you back down. You have to stop pressing up if Pyro is about to fire off sideways lightning, so you stay below and safe. I'd say the safest place to camp out when Pyro speeds up, is below him and on the left side. His Shazam-style bottom lightning bolt is directed towards his right side, so you can camp out safer on his left. If you are at far left of the screen and under him, you cannot be hit with lightning, and you can watch Pyro and hit him at opportune moments.

But also the tree graphics push Koffi down. So you can shave a few seconds when an animal appears by purposely hitting the edge of trees as you descend towards under the canopy. This is especially true for the pine tree coniferous stage. And if an animal pops up at beginning of stage, you can shortcut thru the tree (before the fire starts as touching fire pixels kills Koffi).

I'll post a score soon too, I feel like I should be handicapped since I programmed the game. Of course, my score (Easy mode) was trounced last Koffi round, to my surprise and happiness!

45315. Was on Windy Vines Level 4 when I bought it this time, the wind definitely starts to pick up :). I can use the chaser pretty well now with Pyros mom, but I've yet to get the 500 point tree bonus, I always end up with 250. My hands always need a break after playing this one time with the stock controller, I'm getting old.

46340. Going ahead and posting, not sure if I will get to play again. I get to Level 4 in good shape but lose my lives pretty fast. I enjoyed it, takes skill and patience and can be frustrating at times, bringing back those nostalgic feelings of wanting to throw my controller through the wall :D . Thanks much to Cafeman for his creation!

63,375. And bonus point for activating secret programmers initials.:)

Once you activate the secret, the initials will appear in all the trees until the game is over.

It's been so long since I had played the game, I was fairly terrible at it! It was fun to experience the game with less experience, finally. Each time I lost a Koffi, I would mentally go "oh yeah, I remember now " .
