The critic has spoken ...

Ants

He reviewed the CD versions that are quite a bit cheaper and FF64 got a C+ which is a lot for the critic* (albeit even him didn't particularly appreciate the variants).

It's funny that there's a single A+ vote on it .... surely someone thinks it is the best game the Jag can produce ... which ... you know ... (I've got nothing here).

Well apparently "Brad" liked that you can play it with no buttons .... so there's that.

EDIT: * I mean Alice's mom's Rescue on DC got a D (reviewed 4Y ago)

Saw these! Generally enjoy his reviews and happy to know he has a working Jaguar CD :)

I email him from time to time bugging him to review something new. His humor is pretty solid and i like the retro(ish) layout format of the site.

I had a friend locally purchase food fight (on cart) and claim he enjoyed it; so maybe it's not half bad for what it is supposed to be.

More interested in his Dreamcast reviews than Jaguar...

Some harsh scores in there.

Ecco The Dolphin was frustratingly hard, but not unplayable. .bit surprised how low it scored, espically as MDK II gets of lighter, grade wise..

Mr Driller score raised an eyebrow as well.

Reviews of course are always going to be very subjective.

i endured Ecco until the very end, upon completing it i was somewhat grateful.

one of the later levels is very hard travelling down what can only be described at a water tube in the sky, if you swam out of these tubes you fell to your death

The reader score went from A+ (1 vote) to D+ (3 votes). Evidently the other two voters weren't as fond of the game.

Disclaimer: I have a copy but did not vote since I haven't played it yet.

I had Ecco and MDK II (which the Official UK DC magazine scored 6/10 due to it's difficulty) and used to play both with guides in front of me, still got very frustrated at key sections and abandoned them, picking both up later on PS2 where difficulty had been reduced.

Did similar with DC Skies Of Arcadia.

Had a Gamefaqs guide in front of me, but the random battles getting from A to B became too much, so left game and picked it up later on Game Cube.

The one DC title that had a crippling bug was Starlancer. .

Final (mission) has you co-pilot (who's supposed to warn you when the Ion Cannon is locking on, so you can engage your cloaking device) speech running out of synch with what's actually happening in game,so you get taken out with no chance to avoid getting hit...

I generally agree with the VGC, but not always. I will say he tends to be a bit more generous with homebrews than the original commercial releases.

In many cases he's a lot more generous, but it's pretty inconsistent.

I love that dude's site. I'm always taking a look at his reviews before I decide to invest time in playing something. Some of the stuff I like he hates generally. But I can find appreciation in just about any game. Seems he hates every CD-I game and that's a system on my list to acquire.

Thank you for sharing; I wasn’t aware of that website until today.

I have shyed away from Wave1Games because of all the complaints their games have received.

However, their latest project, Jagboxing, shows promise. What has me interested in this project was the promise of at least a year’s worth of development time before the title sees a release. I hope this will result in a bug-free release worth owning, but only time will tell.

I actually like Ants, I think it's quite fun, but don;t like that high scores aren't saved. Same with Fast Food 64, I like the game, not as much as Ants tho, but it doesn't save the high scores if you're playing to get one. Mine also didn't come with the overlay he was talking about, my Frogz 64 game did but not Fast Food.

functionality exists to save the scores, however it creator chose hot to implement it along with other needy things.

you best take it up with him

I have read these reviews already and I have already reached out to the VGC to thank him for his opinions. FF64 was my very first Jaguar game and has been my most successful game to date. I completely agree with his review, even though he didn't mention 100% Pure Beef Mode.

Ants is not for everyone. I knew this when I worked on it, but I still loved the theme and idea. Squishing ants with your finger is a love it or hate it kind of theme, so I can't really get mad that one review of it is bad. I am grateful atari2600land allowed me to finish the project and add my own elements such as the finger gun, additional insects, bosses and unlockable special options. But NO I totally get his review, to HIM Ants is a boring game and that's fine! Hell Zelda is boring for me, always has been! But that doesn't stop the bazillions of other people who love it.

There is another review of the game here:

As you can see the Second Opinion Games Game Collector loves ANTS and thinks it is Wave 1 Games best product. This game is all about taste and preference.

As for Fast Food 64, the sequel Holiday Snacks is a totally different code base from the original FF64 (it was actually built from ANTS) and as a result it is a much more polished product with greatly improved sound effects and music. (It even has a PAUSE feature and a Music Test menu with 5 playable songs!)

I know the VGC also bought FF64:HS so I am anxious to see his review for this product as well.

In regards to JagBOXING!, it better damn well turn out to be good, it is the ONLY game I am working on this year! I wasn't even going to make anything this year but I always admired Killer Instinct and I wanted to bring something similar to the Jag so I came up with the boxing idea and I ran with it.

I'm sure this post was actually started as a means of poking fun and publicly shaming me for the C+, but you know what? I don't care! I'm actually proud of FF64! I have always said that and I am proud of the review from VGC as well.

It doesn't matter how much crap people talk about me or Wave 1 Games. It doesn't matter how much crap I am given on AA or any other media outlet, I am still making my games and doing what I love and that is more than most people can say for themselves.

Indeed. So far I've thought that Jeff's releases all had potential (I think FF64 is actually fun for what it is) but he puts these games out way, way, WAY too soon.

Stop releasing games that are half-baked.

When I was 14 years old I was a part of an animation community and my creations suffered from two issues: Grandiose ideas and impatience. I would think up big ideas, but halfway though I would realize how much work was involved and end up releasing something shitty and half-done. I briefly returned in my early 20s and the quality of my stuff improved greatly simple by virtue of being an older person with more patience. I am reminded of that with each of his releases.

It's too bad the same mistakes keep being repeated and it's happened often enough that I don't expect anything to change (but would love to be proven wrong). The other issue at hand is I've seen him say several times things like "this is my last game for the Jag" only to turn around and hype up his next big release shortly afterwards. Such emotional outbursts were also true of my younger years.

If more people were willing to put time into making Jag games with rB+ I don't think these games would be getting any attention.

Why dont you use some of that animation experience and past learning experiences and make your own suggestion come true? Instead of sitting around making remarks about somebody elses works how about you BE one of those people you wished would take up using RB+. More people willing to learn RB+ can start with you. I would personally love to see some of your new and improved animations that you have made since you have become older, less emotional and more "mature". In fact I would love to see the older stuff too.

Links or it didn't happen.

You do know I know how to animate as well right?

As for me leaving the scene that doesn't really concern you too much now does it? My time doing Jag games is limited because I do have a family and a life but sometimes I do just look past all of the negativity and keep pushing forward with ideas because in the end its not about cocky little internet trolls and Jaguar cliqs. Its about my love for the console.

I dont really give a damn what anybody thinks about me or my games the fact that you even take the time to troll me on here and on Youtube means that I have already impacted the Jaguar community and I am already a part of the consoles history.

I have already won.

And I did it with my very first damn game.

Even when people try to talk shit about FAST FOOD 64, it is still praised for its gameplay. It has sold over 200 copies (probably close to 300 now I lost count last year) also JagZombies has hit the 200 copies sold mark so obviously I'm doing SOMETHING right.

Im sorry it apparently bothers you that I am like the Energizer bunny and I just keep gping and going but that is who I am.

You see I have now been to gaming events and I have connected with people in the scene. Not just JSIII people but other game companies, other AA members, people new to Jaguar, and most importantly MY CUSTOMERS. Everyone who I have spoke to thinks what I am doing is a good thing. Yes some of my games need some work. Yes there are some bugs in some of them. But I am still one of the people trying to keep this damn Jaguar alive and I stand behind every one of my products.

At the very least maybe we will get a "quality" frogger clone or zombie shooter from another homebrew developer to fill the gaps. Lol.

I am actually WAITING on somebody to try their hand at the concepts I have tried.

I would be satisfied to see such a thing.

Hey those 2 types of games might be a good place for you to start trying to learn RB+!

Good luck
