Yet, another ColecoVision Vaporware

As you may (or might not) know, Coleco was supposed to release Vanguard for the ColecoVision back in the 80s
It sadly became one of the many vaporware announced by Coleco
For years, CollectorVision strived to release prototypes, unreleased and vaporware games announced by former Coleco
In fact, we made it our very own commitment!
Well, today I'm happy to announce yet another former vaporware game!
That's right! We're finally bringing Vanguard to the ColecoVision, and we're very proud to bring you to MOST ACCURATE home conversion of Vanguard!
It even includes the famous original speech synthesis, music and sfx
We're also not afraid to tell you it compares in term of quality to Pac Man Collection and Mario Bros CV version, in other words..... it's arcade perfect!
Yes, it is that much good!!
The cartridge is 128K and is packed with full goodness!
What else can I say, other than you'll have to play it to believe it!
''The best is yet to come''

I do love me some Vangaurd. Not only was it one of my favorite Atari 2600 games but I actually found an arcade cab in a deli in Brooklyn, NY where as soon as I put the quarter in the owner came to yell at my cousin that he was banned from the store & I made believe I didn't know him so I could get my game in.

As an upstanding member of the Collectorvision Colecovision Club, I humbly await the chance to play such a lost treasure.

It's not the exclusive secret club game

The secret club game won't be revealed

Didn't say it would be the secret game but did believe the rom would be made available for club members but, alas, you mention in another reply that it won't be.

Where and when did Coleco announce this?  Where did that picture of the mock-up cartridge come from?  Vanguard was published by Atari for the 2600 and 5200, and it's on the Atarisoft master list...

According to Matt Householder, he started working on the game at Atari before switching to Moon Patrol...

Hadn't seen this announcement before today.  That'll teach me not to scour the forums more often!  I look forward to this release!

I was curious about the circumstances surrounding Vanguard's aborted appearance as well, so I went digging.  This snippet appears in a ColecoVision FAQ:

Quote

Late last year [1982] Coleco reached an agreement with the game maker Centuri for licenses to three arcade games: Phoenix, Vanguard, and Challenger.  Then just before the contract was to be signed, Atari won the license by making a higher offer.  Parker Brothers also outbid Coleco for the Popeye license.

According to the FAQ this was from an article in Fortune Magazine dated 3/7/83.

Interesting that Phoenix was a part of this mix, also.  @retroillucid, got something to tell us regarding the CollectorVision Phoenix? :D

Well, that takes care of that then.  I guess Coleco just put the cart before the horse.

It's worth noting that a similar situation occurred with Tac-Scan.  That game was never released for the CV because Coleco had Nuvatec start working on a port before they negotiated the publishing rights but they were never able to reach an agreement with Sega, so the game was scrapped.  Sega ultimately never got around to making the game themselves, or they simply weren't interested.  They did have other versions in development but only the 2600 one was released.

Hey Vanguard looks great!  Do you know how the controls are implemented?  The arcade had 4 directional buttons and I think the atari 2600 used the controller movements to fire and move but I cannot remember how that exactly worked.

Do you know if you will support firing from the keypad as well for those who have an arcade stick with a button numeric pad or want to build a custom controller?

In any case thank you for all of your great efforts!

This game uses 1 controllers.  Moving the controller pad will move your ship in all direction.  The fire 1 button fires your forward laser.  To fire your upper, lower, or back laser, hold a direction and press fire 1.  Fire 2 button will shoot laser from both guns on top and bottom of your ship.  You can use the keypad 2,4,6,8 to fire your laser in specific direction while being stationary.  You're limited to fire 3 lasers on screen.   You can pause your game by pressing the zero key.
