How to repair a CX-75 LightPen?

Recommended Posts

Just found out, there are 2 versions of AtariGraphics:

http://www.digitpress.com/eastereggs/a48atarigraphics.htm

So, the cart 1 is the light pen version, but we have tested with cart 2...

OMG, what a simple question can result in... ;-)

Thanks to AtariOnline from Poland, very much appreciated. :-)

I don't know if this helps or not, but I had a similar issue with my CX-75. It had fallen apart, but after I tested it to be working, I glued it back together. For a while, it worked fine until it one day it didn't. I tried, everything to get it apart again, but couldn't. I tried stripping a q-tip of its cotton and cleaning the lens with some Windex, but no good came of it (no harm either). I was about to give up when I decided to give it one last try with a bigger screen. It works perfectly on the bigger screen. I guess mine's just near-sighted, but maybe this will help.

If nothing else, I did manage to clean the lens.

wtf they want to ban q tips as well... I just don't understand, it's paper and cotton or wood and cotton.... only a very few are plastic shaft varieties exist. Getting a bit sick of these powerful elite politicos telling everyone how do everything, what to own, eat or not eat, not do, not own. All it does is make the rich one way or another, higher prices = more tax money also. They don't follow the rules they set for all others, an exemption or alternative for themselves... two sets of rules.. time for these folks to go! Wonders if there will be a Grexit or Deutchxit.... such a great countryl can easily stand on it's own.

Quick, stop all cows from life! They might fart! Enjoy that bus ride to Hawaii! In fact just stay right where you are! Walking makes you hungry and you might fart too!

I just don't understand these nut jobs. As we pass away from the accretion disk of our galaxy and the radiation levels lowers they'll start screaming ICE age! As a matter of course as we travel around in space we are affected by stars, gravity and radiation. This affects our weather more than anything we will ever do, other than building to high and wide to the sky... that has been proven to change wind and weather patterns.... you don't hear anything about that though... that's money saved and money for all when you pack the people cattle in to cities like that! $$$

oh well it may be economics, but it becomes political when it's handled by those folks

Thanks Doctor, well our our 'Greens' are going mad, that's for sure. But the EU, too. No one here has made a simple calculation on how many power plants are needed, if every car in Germany (40 M as of 2019) is converted to electricity. A Tesla needs 18 kWh/100 km. Therefore, the big crash must come. As you wrote, they all didn't have just any answer to the problems. They fear the scientists in parliament... ;-) Time for the people to wake up. But they may take some more years...

Thank you - someone gets it. I am so sick and tired of people telling me electric vehicles are the wave of the future. It's lkike the batteries magically recharge themselves, there's no environmental impact due to the lithium in them, etc.

Hello guys

a) They are only planning to ban the q-tips that are made of plastic. In Europe that's probably most of them.

b) I tried my CX-75 on the same Philips CM8833 that we tried luckybuck's CX-75 on. Mine works in both directions, luckybuck's in only one.

c) Way back when the CX-75 was still new, screens usually weren't that much bigger.

Sincerely

Mathy

@Stephen: Even a battery exchange against an oil exchange is sooooo cheap: just around €7,500... ;-)

@Mathy:

a) Yes, but for me this shows, they have too much time... plastics in the oceans is a topic, but we have other, evere topics, too.

b) Great! Thank you, one job less to do.

c) Yes, the ones we worked with, just had in mind the big ones in the living room. But these are mainly used with Pong and the 2600. Yes, you are right.

Therefore, it is more and more clear, an electronic elements is damaged. But I will take the q-tip, of course. :-)

"Plastic in the oceans" is a problem. A big problem. But it's easier to ban plastic than to teach people to put their trash in the trashcan. Or to re-use a plastic bag. Unfortunately.

I moved to the US (in part) to get away from a number of things the EU was doing that I felt were going to become more and more restrictive to personal freedom.

The US is now trying to turn itself into the EU, and I don't understand why.

On-topic for a moment, I always thought that the CX75 lightpens were really nifty.

Hello luckybuck

... the Greta generations already got the point...

The online generation that sends each other messages while they are sitting (almost) shoulder to shoulder? That goes on holiday by plane a couple of times a year? Where they only see the beach, some bars and the place they sleep at? Who charter a bus to get to the place where they protest pro-environment, because they do not want to travel by train?

Sincerely

Mathy

Sadly we are doing FAR too little and its WAY too late, politicians talk about change yet keep the fossil fuels because of the revenue, yet we are still destroying the planet so quickly its shocking.. I watched Climate Change: The Facts narrated by Richard Attenborough the other night with my wife and we were just mortified by the damage already done and how its simply being allowed to continue....Its a sobering watch folks and we really don't have a lot of time left to make radical changes before us ordinary folk are exposed to the wrath of a dying planet.

So what I'm saying here is........Get busy Atari-ing while you still can!!

As for that programme, I can't recommend more highly that people watch it, I rarely like promoting MSM because of their usual bias and agenda's but this is one time I will because its real...And quite disturbing..

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00049b1

Politicians I have not much time for, they are fickle and open to deception from day one, science on the other hand is hard to BS as there's almost instant access by other scientists to any claims which can be disputed and disproved very quickly, so when teams of scientists all start saying the same thing from over the globe then I listen....Science makes sense, politicians make money..

Thanks Mclaneinc,

Don't worry at all, those hints are very welcome. BBC is known for high quality and this worldwide! Attenborough is a highly respected man worldwide, so no wonder, the why for the SIR... Be sure, we listen to those courageously people!

Just saw:

'BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it’s due to rights issues. In the UK? Here's some advice.'

Well, we were not Atarians, if couldn't find a solution for this. Those, who are familiar with Farb's preservation project, know, what to do with keywords:

BBC.Climate.Change.The.Facts

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00049b1/climate-change-the-facts

22 days left in the UK...

Btw, have made a calculation, how many nuclear power plants are needed, if all German cars migrate to electric cars: the answer is: 11 more ! We now have just 7 running... ready for disassembling... please see file attached. It is in German, but with Deepl, you should know in your language, too. ;-)

As of 2019, no one(!) every asked that question in the German parliament. That is why, they fear the scientists, we may ask a 2nd question, too... ;-)

The problem is, the solutions are worse than the problems they pretend to solve. They use more energy than fossil fuels net net. They don't reduce pollution as they just shift it to another location and actually produce more waste and pollution than fossil fuels. Battery storage is still lossy and wasteful and super toxic material on the modern versions are not exactly recyclable either as to do so uses ridiculous resources and energy again...

Smaller wind power on location and hydroelectric power are winners though Large wind farms are losers, and solar panels are still net net losers. Direct sunlight heating of water and homes using various methods are far better solutions. Near shore wave generators are good provided they are located near cliffs and rocks etc, and designed not to crush sea life etc.

Plastics and hormones in the water supply are far more dangerous to the human body and mind and need to be addressed for sure.

Carbon dioxide is plant food.

This stuff isn't rocket science, but the more they make it seem like it is, the costlier and less effective it becomes. Farms used to use all of the above, and they captured pig and cow waste to use as a methane source to burn off and make the engines run to get the job done. when it didn't have any more gas to give, it was used fertilized the fields. Very clean very efficient, and you didn't need to kill off all the livestock to save the planet. Modern methods ruined that. Old farms used wind to pump water and make electricity, the water storage tank was used to run simple machinery and irrigate. Supplying and meeting all needs. There were many ways to skin the cat. They used them all. This stuff can fill volumes.

Some of the interesting old stuff I've seen was using solar heating of water and capturing the heated air current above the collector to spin a turbine and generate electricity. Now that was cool!

any way, how do we fix that light pen!

Well written and everything very true. To my mind, we have to start a worldwide new Manhatten project, this time for controlled fusion. But there is a reason, why the money isn't flowing into this vital project. There is more than enough energy in the quantum vacuum!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_effect

The remaining question is just, how do we get access to it? ;-)

Regarding the light pen, Mathy and I will make a test based on the collected facts here in the last 2 days of May. Even there, we will find a solution, thanks to all here. ;-)

Hi together!

It is solved! At the HATZ 2019 meeting we had 4 CX-75 light pens from 4 different users, 1 was running like a charm, the others needed an extension cable! Why this? The contact pins inside the plug to the joystick port are way too much inside the plug. An extension cable with large pins can fix this, but there is still a 'loose contact'. With some tries, one can find the best position, at this point, the plug with the cable has to be fixed. That is all. On the other hand, we have learned something in the past, as Mclaneinc wrote, it shouldn't be a big problem... please see attachments below (thanks to Charlie Chaplin for sharing!).

So, this means, we have a CX-70 for the 400/800 series, we have a CX-75 for the XL series, but who the heck is building a CX-AtariAge one with regard to the XE series? ;-)

Well, a Fisher Space Pen edition to work aboard the ISS, is o. k., too.... I am moderate here... ;-)
