Anyone pick up that new Konami collection?

any good? straight ports or enhanced? Might pick it up if it's not awful.

I think the emulation is Hamster, like all the Arcade Archives releases, so it should be accurate, but with no extra frills. I wish it had more games. They're selling Time Pilot separately so I guess what we see is what we'll get.

I'm grabbing this collection as you get games for $2 a pop versus the $8 when sold individually.  That said, I'll likely grab Time Pilot a little later (Time Pilot is a really fun game).

 

Still seems odd that the CastleVania collection doesn't include Haunted Castle but includes Kid Dracula.  Doesn't matter as I'm buying both (and the Contra collection as well).

 

I always wondered why we never got Haunted Castle for the NES... but the CastleVania games were great as well.

ooh I love me some Time Pilot. Played it at the arcade at the start of February and got through all the levels and halfway round again, best I have done for ages and much better than I usually do on emulation. Can't beat the real thing. But nonetheless I shall probably spring for a Switch version.

There's something awesome about finding a classic game at an arcade or some random location nowadays.  I found a small arcade in town and they had a cocktail Stargate which I had to just look at and admire.  They had some other classics (including a half full play choice ten) there.  I plan on spending some time there in the coming months.

 

As for Time Pilot, I first played it at a bowling alley in the mid 80's.  It was a lot tougher than the Colecovision version that I played a lot of at my neighbours place.  A game that I still enjoy today.

Ended up picking up TP and the Konami bundle, both pretty nice. Good to be able to set up Nemesis and Vulcan Venture with shoot and bomb on the same button and with autofire, in this day and age unless I'm playing on a proper cab I can't be arsed to have to keep tapping a button all the time when I'm playing a game. Dunno why we got Life Force instead of Salamander in the EU region since every version of the game I ever encountered in the wild over here was Salamander.

 

In general these old games are ideal for a quick handheld blast. My only complaint is that between the various brief compilations and individual Arcade Archive ones I end up with loads of them scattered about in my list of games and ideally I'd like them accregated into one easily navigable collection, but I guess you can't have everything you want.

 

Oh forgot to mention: the arcade I played TP in was this place:

Which is pretty fantastic, covers a lot of scope from ancient to modern, you can spend a very enjoyable day there playing your old favourites as they were intended to be played. I was fortunate enough to be invited to a meetup there and had the excellent good fortune to meet Larry DeMar there (of Vid Kidz fame) and spent a good evening in the bar with him chatting Robotron and Defender and basically being a bit of a fanboy I'm afraid.  Good times :D.

It's indeed quite baffling that the usual features from the Arcade Archives series are not there... No Tate mode!
I may be more interested in the Contra & Castlevania bundles, but I'm on the fence. I wish Rondo of Blood and SotN were included in the Castlevania collection for instance, even though I understand it would make it irrelevant to PS4 owners.

The Castlevania one released on Switch yesterday- it's sorely tempting.

 

What sucks for me is that Capcom is running 50% off sale, so now I have to choose between whether I want the Castlevania one or the Capcom Fighting game bundle, hehe.  (too many bills, not enough disposable income, lol)

I was a bit gunshy after my diappointment with the Genesis Collectiona the SNK collection, but I bought the Castlevania one today.  Happy to say, it's amazing!  Plays great, and no problematic input lag.  Looking forward to the extra bells and whistles that are supposed to be added soon via patch.

my wife picked up the Castlevania collection for her Switch.  I haven't had a chance to mess with it, but I watched her play some and it looks fantastic- it's one of her favorite series so she was pretty excited to play it on her Switch.

I picked up the collection and I like it quite a bit. I like how the GB emulation has SGB style limited color, a square pixel mode, and a dot matrix filter.

Apparently M2 in their infinite wisdom decided to use the Rev0 version of castlevania 1 instead of Rev1 or RevA ROMs. This means all of the audio glitches and game bugs from that NES ROM file are present in the Castlevania collection for all platforms.

Interesting.  What glitches and bugs are there, specifically, that were fixed in later revisions?

Thanks for posting this.  As I was playing this, I noticed the sound issues.  they can fix this update correct?  I do have have to say that the $20 CV collection is very worth it.

I haven't played it yet, but watched Austin stream a full playthrough of CV1 without any issues of note. It sounded just fine to my ears, although he wondered if there perhaps was a very slight pop or something to that effect every once in a while. But ultimately if it's slightly off sounding, it isn't going to be because of the revision used.

 

I suspect 99% of the people that played the release version back in the day were unaware there were even problems, just as will be the case today. The issues were very minor such as a small chance at the end of the game of the game crashing when a lot of sprites are on the screen and a single sound effect a few stages in that starts a few frames too soon. Not the type of stuff that is a big deal, although it's never fun to have a game crash on you near the end.

 

It's somewhat bizarre, but ultimately all but a non-issue that the release version was used. Knowing the lousy archival practices of these big Japanese publishers, I wonder if M2 perhaps was provided with source code that just happened to represent the release state of the game, rather than hacking a rom to eliminate the licensed by Nintendo notice on the title screen.

 

Otherwise, I cannot fathom why a company that's renown for their attention to detail wouldn't use the latest revision with know fixes, however minor they may be. That's simply not M2's style.

There was absolutely a slight pop here and there on the NES games (via the Xbox One version, anyway). Faint pops aside, the sound and visuals were all spot-on. Input lag is at a bare minimum as well. I didn't experience any crashing on CV1, but obviously it is a known issue. Since M2 will be adding in more content, it's possible they may polish up the collection further as well as update the CV1 revision. Although based on interviews, they have stated they try not to fix bugs or glitches in games they emulate (or port) in order retain their authenticity. The inclusion of the original version of Castlevania in this case may have completely intentional, flaws and all.
