+jedimatt42
Is there a known backlog of issues for the usability of the primary file site? I have pretty bad luck understanding what I am looking at when browsing around... For instance: Geneve/9640news/CAT10 In that folder most of the files are named ___.ARK. Most of the files are not Archiver ARK files, but just single xmodem/TIFILES. I'm not trying to complain, or ask anyone to fix a bunch of stuff few care about.. What I would like to see is guide to using the site and a list of gotchas - in one place. Another one I remember... Tons of floppy images under a folder called 'videos' - nothing to do with videos Anything others know about? -M@
+Lee Stewart
It would be nice if the file, sitelist.txt (in the root directory), got updated on a regular basis—monthly, perhaps. Right now, it gets updated only upon request. It is currently 17 months out of date. ...lee
+mizapf
Yes, the nomenclature on TIFILES and ARK got heavily mixed up in the earlier times, maybe because TIFILES packaging only appeared for transfer, and the format delivered by the Archiver was similar to this format. +9640News
The files under the 9640News directory with the CATxx subfolders originated from GEnie back in the day. The original CD I distributed with that CD had a FILES.BBS file for each folder with a file description of the contents of that folder from the original 9640News BBS I had up during the 90's. At one point in time, Don and I had a mysql database that had the source path, filename, and any file description that may have existed so one could do a search and download from a web interface a bit easier than what is there now. I think that has been long discarded in the past 10-15 years. I know there were quite a few things I had also uploaded to Whtech for preservation purposes that look like it disappeared. Anyways, when I go to look for something "old", I use the sitelist.txt file and do a search for a word or partial word/string to try and find what I am seeking. It is, what it is. Now, I am pretty sure, the CYC with Cadd99 has a complete file breakdown of at least the contents of the 9640News CD I distributed that I gave Mike permission to distribute with Cadd99. If you were looking for a specific file from before 1997, that is probably the only complete resource I know for those files. +jedimatt42
Yep, I spend hours looking at the site list files. Can't tell from file names, what a thing is. Unless you already know of the existence of the thing, and what cute name it had. I guess that is what the micropendium stack is for... -M@
