Can someone please explain why Super Baseball exists?

I always wondered why Atari bothered to produce Super Baseball (which I do not own, and can't be bothered to fire up in Stella). When I saw the late-'80s 2600 catalog, I found it quite odd that they had both Super Baseball and RealSports Baseball available, since they looked so much alike.

I just checked the screenshots in the AA archives and got further reinforcement that Super Baseball appears to be little more than a graphical hack (and an INFERIOR one at that) of RealSports Baseball, with a title screen added.

Is there more to it than this? If not, WHY would they bother with Super Baseball? Or a better question... WHY would they have both it and the older, but quite possibly better, RealSports Baseball for sale at the same time?

Basically Super Baseball was a bug fix (and a mild tweak) to RS Baseball.

Do you happen to know what the bugs were?

I don't remember any obvious bugs in RS Baseball... but then again Atari's manual writers had a way of turning bugs into "features" and as a kid I didn't know any better...

You might be able to figure it out by comparing these two reviews:

I don't own either Super Baseball or Pete Rose Baseball but I'd eventually get them just for collector's sake.

However, how good is Pete Rose Baseball? If it's as good as you say, I'll be looking for it.

Pete Rose Baseball is GREAT. Think Bases Loaded for NES.

I think it looks and plays like Hardball for the Atari 8bits and C64 too.

Yeah, Hardball is the association I make too, since I had that for my Tandy 1000 (PC compatible) back then. I think that look was pretty much the standard approach to video game baseball in the late '80s. It's nice to see that a decent rendition was possible with the 2600.

I was a big fan of Realsports Baseball before playing Hardball and Gamestar's Starleague Baseball on the Atari computers. It must have been for only one summer or so, but now I have no idea why I liked it so much both RS and Super Baseball are real stinkers. And so is 7800 Baseball, Atari had no idea how to make baseball games Home Run to 7800 Baseball to Lynx Baseball Heroes, all stinkers :)

I always liked Super Challenge Baseball best back in the day, although I didn't often have someone to play against. (My dad would humor me occasionally, but he never really got into the Atari that much... but he more than made up for it with his keen interest in losing repeatedly to me at Mean 18 Golf on my PC circa 1988.)

In the end I probably played RealSports Baseball the most. But I should note that I rarely played sports games anyway.

BTW, off topic -- I had a great time this past weekend with an old friend I've known since 5th grade, playing the NES I traded you the Intellivision for!

I only played Hardball on the Apple IIgs... Pete Rose isn't THAT good... but it's pretty close to Bases Loaded IMO.

Cool, I often play Ikari Warriors, Commando, Blades of Steel, and Tecmo Super Bowl with some of the same college friends I played the NES with back in 1988 :)

I've never had too many friends who enjoy the Intv., must be the pads or something.

And to stay on topic, RS Baseball still blows

Man, you are hardcore pimpin' that site these days, aren't you?  ;)

 @ "Hardcore pimpin' "

Realsports Baseball (Atari 1982) D-

This wuz Atari's big ass opportunity to make up fo da dismal Homerun debacle 'n release a decent baseball game -- but they failed, man. It be a shame really, because the graphics 'n controls be respectable, 'n da gameplay be fundamentally sound, man. Unfortunately, due to an apparent lack of play-testing, da game be chock-full of obvious flaws 'n bugs dat spoil da action, man. Da pitchin' portion is ruined by da fact dat every pitch looks da same, straight ova da plate n' shit. Yo' ass neva know if da pitch be a ball until yo' ass let dat shit go or swin' right through it! Da hittin' be weak; balls get pimpslapped to da same spots ova 'n over, man. Atari's attempt at implementin' fly balls, havin' da ball "ring", be ill-conceived n' shit. Runna control be surprisingly phat - yo' ass can even lead off 'n steal, know what I'm sayin'? Intuitive fieldin' 'n throwin' controls make dat shit fun to toss da ball around, man. Da only problem be dat da ball often sails ova yo' teammate's HEAD, forcin' tha dude's ass to chase down da ball n' shit. Da computa does dis all da time 'n dat shit looks absolutely ridiculous, know what I'm sayin'? Da one-playa mode be incredibly tough n' shit. Anotha annoyance be havin' to wait fo all da players to enter/leave da field afta every innin' (yawn) n' shit. This be a major disappointment.

Supa Baseball (Atari 1988) F

This final 2600 baseball game from Atari takes two steps back fo every step forward, know what I'm sayin'? Dis wuz Atari's last chance to fix da Realsports Baseball game, which was flawed but at least showed potential, man. But both games look 'n play nearly the same, man. Although several bugs from Realsports has been fixed, da poor gameplay remains, know what I'm sayin'? Da blocky field looks basically da same, man. Da players look slightly WORSE (they be now a single color), but they do move fasta - even fasta than da ball in some cases! Unlike Realsports Baseball, yo' ass has da additional annoyance of havin' to wait fo da batters to walk to 'n from home plate, 'n these guys be SLOW n' shit. Thrown balls don't go sailin' ova fielder's heads as often, but pimpslapped balls still go to da same spots ova 'n over, man. Da computa be nearly invincible, man. There's a nice title screen, but dis kain't hide the fact dat Supa Baseball be repackaged garbage n' shit.

Don't forget about RS Baseball for the 5200. I always thought it looked and played great. Definitely my favorite baseball game before the NES era.

Came here 15 years later with the same question as the OP. Anyone have any more stories about Super Baseball?

Can't remember where I saw this (the old printed Digital Press guide, maybe) but there was a bug in RS Baseball that made stealing bases too easy. Super Baseball fixed this.

Playing against the computer (when batting), is it even possible to make it to first base via walk, hit or error? I remember playing this for around 15 innings until I got bored & frustrated by having the CPU throw a perfect game against me. It is a little sad that this game could have been a whole lot better.
