Ultima series

I've recently started or "attempted" to play the Ultima games, but I don't remember any of the commands, I've figured some stuff out, but I really need the instructions. Anyone know where I get these online? I've found a couple of walk-throughs, but they have nothing about the basics of gameplay.

Another thing, secifically with Ultima II, I can't seem to start a character, I've tried both "new character" and play or continue and with the one option it says I don't have a new player disk (I have the image that I downloaded with the game), and attempting to play the game and inserting the player disk locks up the computer. I tried two different player disks off of two differnt ftp sites with the same result. I'm guessing I need to format a new player disk or "create" one, but I don't know how. I've tried Dos and a duplicate disk utility that is on one of the Utima II disks, neither have been successful.

Commands are usually assigned to keys that have the first letter of the word :

(a)ttack, ©ast spell, etc. The game will display the word when you press the associated key. Some will do nothing unless your character is of a certian class or has a required object, but the command will still be displayed. For example Wizards can use spells 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9... but Clerics can use spells 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

BTW to create a blank player disk, you just boot up the player disk...and put a new one in the drive when prompted.

You may want to check out the following site, which has manuals for most of the Ultima games:

Trigon Dragon's Ultima Dox

It's been a long time since I've played the older Ultima games, and the only one I never did play was Ultima V. Someday I'll have to go through them all in sequence, although I have problems with Ultima VIII and Ultima IX (neither of which I finished, because, well, they sucked!) I'm a long-time Ultima fan and have every Ultima (I through IX, both Ultima Underworlds, both Worlds of Ultima) boxed, plus the two U7 add-on packs, plus many different compilations.

To show how pathetic I am, here's a picture of a wall at my office at Ion Storm adorned all the Ultima maps and some Ultima posters (this was taken before U9 came out):

I meant that I hit the [esc] key and then nothing happens, it just sits on the "insert disk" screen. But I downloaded new versions of everything (from another ftp site) and it works fine now, so it had to be a bad copy or something. Thanks for the site Albert.

By the way...I used to have all the maps and stuff through ultima IV on my wall too, back when I had the original copies. I have never played anything beyond Ultima IV, because that's the last one they made for the 8-bit Atari and that's the only computer I had until about '95 when I finally bought my first Pentium PC (which is the PC I still have, soon to be upgraded to a P3 or 4 chip), I even used my Atari for college, from '92 to '95! I'm an original die hard, now that I have my 130xe hooked up again, It gets the most use once again over my PC and C64. I never understood why people always claimed the C64 was superior to the Atari, now that I've had a C64 for about a year, and have quite a library built up, it seems clear to me that the Atari is superior, especially with graphics and games...hmm, 16 color graphic art programs on the C64 or 128/256 color art programs on the XE...which is better for my digital art...hmm (I'm an artist). Anyway, when I'm done with the first four Ultima's on the Atari, I'll look for others on the C64 and PC. Maybe they will be the first PC games I actually buy for my PC.

Cool! Another Ultima fan. I too am a long time fan of Ultima and I even have an Ultima section on my web page. As far as an archive, it is probably best to start at the source of the games, Origin. Here is the archive listing site,

http://www.uo.com/archive/

It has instructions for the Encore CD versions of the game. They should help. Best of luck!

I forgot to mention something. I have completed Ultima's 1 through 3 (actually I did finish them in reverse order. The first Ultima I ever played was Ultima III, completed it, played Ultima II, completed it, Ultima I and completed it. I have also completed Ultima VI which is my favorite of all the Ultima. It is a shame about how Origin ruined Ultima IX which was supposed to be the last of the Ultima with the character of the Avatar. Myself, I had a different sort of ending in mind for the game and I don't want to ruin the game for you by telling you how Ultima IX ends.

If you need any help with Ultima I through III or perhaps VI, let me know. I think I have my notes on those games somewhere.

Best of luck!

The only one you'll probably find on store shelves these days is Ultima IX, and that's not one I recommend. At least you can probably find it in the bargain bin. All the others you'll probably have to find on eBay, and with all the Ultima fans out there they won't be cheap. But if all you want to do is play them, you could probably find most of them online. The ones that'll give you the biggest headaches are Ultima VII and VII Part II, since Origin used a proprietary memory manager (Voodoo) that can only run from DOS.

Atari Ultima's can be found at Holmes...and Lemon64 has all of the C64 versions.

PC Ultima 1 through 8 and Ultima spinoffs can be found here (java/cookies enabled) :

http://www.abandonware.fr.fm/

Click "jeux de role" on the left, pick a title, and click "telecharger" to download.

The files are zipped .rar's...no passwords needed.

Found the Alien Trilogy there too...and the full cd of Earthworm Jim. Yowza!

I actually played the games in the same order as you, AtariDude, and then played Ultima IV. I never finished any of them, but had a lot of fun playing them ocassionally for a few hours (I was playing AR:City&Dungeon the rest of the time . But I always intended to go through them in order and complete at least the four Atari 8-bit games. I owned Ultima I-III, original, store bought copies, but Ultima IV I got off a pirate BBS years ago, and it never worked right. The biggest bug being that the hack would not let you transact with anybody. Maybe this was part of the protection scheme? I don't have IV yet as I am currently skurting the edge of what is "legal" for me to download. I've only downloaded games that I used to own original copies of that I purchased. I'm considering them the backup copies I never had.

I know that Origin made it legal to download Ultima IV for the PC ( I have the link on my page) but I wonder if the same would apply to other versions. Seems like of silly to say it is ok to copy the PC version so long as you don't charge someone for it but not ok on other platforms.

They made Ultima IV legally downloadable for the PC as an enticement to get people to go out and pay for some of their older titles.

Anyway, let me know if you need any help with Ultima I, II, III or VI. VI is my favorite and I have the actual box for the PC with the cloth map and the Black Stone. I wish other companies would do something similar with their games. It would make games more enjoyable.
