FYI...WinXP & APE

I got this message from Steve Tucker as it pretains to running APE on WinXP..

"You will need to use a DOS boot disk from Windows ME in order to

run APE for DOS under Windows XP. Ape'98 will not work at all in XP,

the

support for the VxD driver model was taken out in WinXP.

Thanks

Steve"

I will admit.. I don't know what that means with the boot disk... but... thought I would pass it on.

Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that APE won't work in Windows XP. Thanks for passing that information along. To make a boot disk, you need either DOS, Windows 95 or Windows 98. I don't know if this works in Windows ME or not. If you open up a DOS shell, stick a blank 3.5" floppy in the drive and then type:

format a: /sys

Be *certain* that you type a: here and not some other letter that represents a hard drive!! This will format the floppy and put the system files on it necessary to boot the disk (meaning instead of loading your operating system from the hard drive, it'll load it from the floppy disk instead). You can also use the /q parameter for a quick format.

If you already have a formatted 3.5" disk, you can just use the sys a: command, which will copy the system files onto the disk and make it bootable.

You should then be able to leave this disk in the 3.5" drive, reboot your computer, and DOS should load from the floppy. Assuming you don't have a strange setup with your hard drives or motherboard BIOS, this should just work. It's possible that you might have to go into your motherboard BIOS and change the boot device order (for instance, I have my BIOS set to always go to C: first so it doesn't waste time looking at the floppy drive or CD-ROM on bootup). Once booted, you should be able to access your hard drives to run APE unless they're formatted with NTFS (or FAT32 and you used an old version of DOS to format the disk).

It sounds more complex than it really is. If you have any additional questions, please fire away..

Thanks for the info! I guess this means that I won't be upgrading to windowsXP anytime soon! I use APE '98 and love it, and since 95% of my PC use is for APE '98, XP is definately out. I'm certainly not going to downgrade to DOS A.P.E. I just wish Steve would do a Linux or some type of Unix/Xenix version, then I could just start using those and say good by to windows forever!!! ( I've already decided that Win'98 and my current computer are the last MS-DOS/Windows computers I own, I'm going with Linux at my next upgrade!) Now I just need to learn more about Linux and how to install that system on a PC.
