This is good information to know, especially if it's not already in the Atari 8-bit FAQ. Once you've finished your list I'll store it away for use in our 8-bit section when we get that online.

I haven't much been into collecting tapes for any of the systems that use 'em (Atari 8-bit, Vic-20, C64, TI 99/4a). They're just not as easy to deal with as carts and it's doubtful that most of them even work these days. Would be interesting to break out a few ancient Atari 8-bit tapes and try them in a 410 or 1010 tape recorder, though.

Yeah I usually don't bother with tapes, but for some reason I started to collect tapes and disks for the Atari 400/800 that were put out by Atari Inc. I like the boxes, they remind me of my youth. Memories...

I have no desire to collect non-Atari tapes and disks, there are just way too many.

BTW, someone should really look into the Atari 400/800 cart list. There are a bunch of gaps in the CXL and RX part list.

Matt,

Here's a couple for you...

Pole Position/Atari Demo TX8034

Twilight World TX9042

Sling Shot TX9044

That's all I could find without excavating too much up here.

I'll have to dig out Atari's master part number list for you and get you the rest.

Did a minor search and didn't find any tapes other than the ones listed. One correction: The Italian language tape is CX-4125, not 4122. (Have two Italians sets ,but no French. Trade anyone?). There are other series of Atari tapes. The Dorsett educational tapes, for instance. I forget the number scheme for those. Then there are still others like Joystick Sketchpad are TX90xx or something. The Pole Position tape, in fact, looks like TX8034. Logical since the cart is RX8034.

Super Pac-Man

Jr. Pac-Man

Any help on these very much appreciated,

Matt,

I dug out Atari's Master List but surprisingly there was no list for the early CX model tapes. I'll keep looking because I was sure I saw some paperwork here with those numbers listed. Here's the list that did exist,,,

TX9546 Track & Field (Multi) TBM9546

TX9547 Track & Field (Multi) TSM9547

Note that the list starts with TX9028.

TX9029 & 9030 are not even listed. There are also various blanks, TX9034 and others.

Obviously there are more tapes as the Pole Position/Atari Demo I have is TX8034.

Someone else pointed out that Pole Position cart is RX8034. But i don't know if we can assume that to always be the case, that the tape counterpart will be the same number with the TX prefix.

John,

Thanks alot for doing all that typing . Much appreciated.

Does "multi" mean that there were two cassettes in a package? For instance, DKJr is

TX9538 Donkey Kong Jr. (Multi) TSM9538

TX9545 Donkey Kong Jr. (Multi) TBM9545

If so, its kind of strange they are not consecutive.

Thanks again,

Actually "multi" is referring to the language. Note that the first few international tapes say German. Towards the end most of the games were duplicated as you mentioned above. The only difference was the International part number TSM vs. TBM. The TxM prefix probably stands for Tape 'x' Multi. I don't know what the 'B' or 'S' would be though. Maybe a country or something.

Sorry I can't help more with that.

Got a message from our European correspondent Actually I need to get him signed on here. Here is what he says about tapes:

"The official Atari releases of cassette type were labeled in Germany TXG"

I did not know that . I asked about the "multi" cassettes.

"Never seen or heard of (even old vendor catalogues and magazines never

announced)."

So perhaps the TX95xx multi series were unreleased?

This the list of German releases he owns:

  • TXG4110 Programmieren leich gemacht (programming made easy)

TXG4114 Europäische Städte und Länder (european states and capitals)

TXG4115 Zinsen und Tilgung (interests and repayment)

TXG4123 Scram

TXG9510 Aufgepasst/Streit der Käfer

TXG9514 Fehler ABC Deutsch-Englisch (spelling trainer german-english)

TXG9517 Graph it

TXG55007 Noch mehr Basic (even more Basic, programming course)

TXN4121 Atari Energie

The last one, TXN, is Dutch . The N is for Netherlands. Well, now I am more confused than when the thread started.

  • 8 months later...

Thank John Hardie, he's the guy with all the lists (Master of Lists perhaps?).

So which games did you do? Can you confirm which of those games came out and which didn't? Johnjust pulled a master part list from an old Atari doucment, it doesn't nessicarily mean they were released.

TX9051 onwards were not released...

Contagion and Z-force - were my titles and both did not ship - nor did Tubebaddies (Ivan Macintosh and Richard Munns)...

I have a copy of the unfinished version of Moonbase (I never knew it as Cygnus X1 - how strange) - it was never released...

As to the other titles - I've not heard of Cavernaut or Zone Patrol, but I have heard of Cavernia and Plastron released by other publishers ;) - could they be the same games maybe??

I'm still working on a website - I have gotten copyright release :). But getting so little time its too slow for words - I would love to put up all these titles and more - with information, contracts, info on who coded what etc and actual 8bit demos...

I have a tape maker master disc of Plastron only...

The others only exist as disc files - I could plop them onto cassette I guess, its a trivial task. My trusty XC11 was the mastering unit for several games - maybe it still works :)

We never went to tape except at the last minute for submission and media testing...

If I can find a way of accelerating getting all this stuff live on the web I'd love to share it all with everyone :)

Hmm.. Interesting. So were these also planned as disk releases or onyl tape? I suppose working with disks would be alot easier than tapes.

BTW what games did you write? I never knew you wrote games for Atari itself.

Contagion and Z-force - were planned as tape releases only - Atari did not produce any disc products at that time in the XE's lifecycle...

All games were developed thru to submission as disc titles even though final media was casette - one would not develop a game using a cassette system :)

The finished titles were then dropped onto casette, written out as a binary file with a simple cassette boot loader added, then tested and sent for duplication from a series of master casettes...

Plastron was both a disc and cassette game - we mastered both versions (I have a cassette copy somewhere) - essentialy the same game with a graphical cassette loading screen added...

Project Xanthien, Shadow of the Beast and Menace were disc based as they never got far enough to drop onto cassette for any tests - although both were designed as a single cassette load each...

Zero War was released as a cassette from Byte Back in the UK I think...

While I don't have a tape player to test them on. I'd debate whether

they are a sturdy medium or not. I have a number of old 80s tapes

some of which have been battered around in my car for years and

they still work. If a tape can withstand the extreme temperatures that

a car can experience then a few computer tapes stored in a closet for

20 years have a good shot at working.

I'm not really one for collecting them either. I am more intersted in

carts and disks since those are what I used as a kid. Though I recently

stumbled upon a cache of boxed Atari tapes some still sealed. There are

some good titles too like Zaxxon and a Temple of Apshai sequel that I'd

like to try but I have no tape player! Ironically a few weeks ago I saw

one at a thrift and passed it up because I never thought I would find

any tapes!
