Gregory DG
sorry for the idiotic question but whats an ebay snipper? That's another way of saying "winning bidder". No kidding... I don't think I've ever won an auction without having to snipe it. What makes me angry is when people keep bidding it up even though there may be 5 days to go! JUST WAIT FOR THE LAST DAY FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!
holygrailvideogames.com
If you want to buy one of my items, please be a bidder who just keeps bidding in order to be the highest bidder throughout the auction. If you want to bid on an item that I want, please be a sniper. At least that way, whoever is willing to pay the most will get it, and the price won't get out of hand. Bryan
Yeah, the only things you can do bid as much as you're willing to pay beforehand and hope no one wants to pay more (Your proxy bid can hold off snipers as long as you're willing to bid enough) or try sniping it yourself in the last few seconds. Snipers hate high proxy bids (they're counting on the previous bidder just having bumped it up a buck or two) and regular bidders hate losing it in the last few seconds when they would have bid more (but had no proxy in place). -Bry
sku_u
The last item I wanted badly I bid my max amount 20 minutes into the auction. That bid survived 4 snipers. I've also won items by sniping them at the last minute. Bid when you think it's best to bid and bid your max amount you are willing to spend. If you lose, move onto the next auction. I always get a little chuckle when I read a thread about someone complaining about being sniped at the end of an auction.
Bryan
I always get a little chuckle when I read a thread about someone complaining about being sniped at the end of an auction. Yeah, me too. It's an auction. If you didn't protect your bid, then you lose. I think it's funny to do an "almost-snipe" where you place a really high bid in the last minute, and watch the ineffective snipes of others as you refresh. -Bry
Mendon
Only thing is, eBay isn't a REAL auction because there are no snipers in real auctions. Real auctions go on until everyone stops bidding but the winner. Sniping is good for bidders, bad for sellers. And I'm sure that when enough sellers complain that they aren't getting the highest price possible and eBay learns it is losing $$$$ because items don't sell for as high as they could (which means lower closing fee's) they will change the procedure. I've seen it suggested here and its been discussed on other boards that eBay is considering a change that would allow auctions to hit their designated end time but won't officially close until 5 or 10min have gone by without a bid. If so, sniping is gone. Mendon

I'm not sure if Ebay could make this change without buying out Yahoo, especially if the idea is already trademarked. One thing's for sure. If that change is made, I won't be bidding on anything without a BIN anymore. It'd too much of a pain in the ass to sit there for hours to wait for something to acutally end as a buyer or as a seller.
Gregory DG
Is there a site that allows for silent bidding? That would be more like real bidding without letting snipers get in on the action.
Mendon
Real auctions also do not have BINs, automated listing, automated email responses and listbots. What's your point? Just what I posted.. eBay is not a real auction even though its referred to as such. If you've ever been to a real, honest to goodness auction you'd know the difference in a second. Can you picture what a real auction would be like if it was run the way eBay is: the item would be up for inspection, the auctioneer asks for bids and is greeted with silence. Finally the auctioneer would say "Going once"..... silence..... "Going twice"...... silence... and as his gavel start's its downward swing to signal the close, 20 people jump up at once screaming bids and the one who yelled the loudest as the gavel hit won. Calling eBay an auction is like calling McDonalds a resturant or a Big Mac food.... none of them is the real deal, just cheap imitations that give you heartburn and make many people say "I ain't doin that again". Mendon that's a good analogy. It's a good analogy only if you accept the premise that a "traditional" auction is better than eBay. Whoever has the highest bid in place, when the auction ends, wins. It is very annoying if you have been the high bidder for 6 days and 23 hours, if someone outbids you at the last second...but it's not surprising, nor should it be a cause for complaint. By bidding early, you are indirectly advertising your max bid to anyone who cares to bid in minimum increments, and inviting people to outbid you. Ebay's rules encourage sniping, so I snipe. I win a lot of auctions while I am sleeping or not at home because I do snipe from time to time. Hell, I even have one Atari Age member who has put me on his blocked bidder list. He told me that he added me because I am a sniper. It killed me that someone would block me (I have paid for every auction that I have ever been a high bidder on). As a seller I would rather have someone buy my item that I know will pay than to have some newbie buying my stuff.

Actually I just use sniping software.. set it to 10 or so seconds and forget about it (sometimes days beforehand). But you gotta realize in the end, sniping doesn't really mean shit.. it's CASH and how much you're willing to bid that's king. Put it this way... even though I ONLY snipe on ebay auctions (and yes my bids do go through), I probably only win around 1 in 10 times. Yeah cuz I'm a cheapskate! Exactly. Snipe or not, whoever has the highest bid at the end of the auction wins. If you didn't win, you didn't bid high enough. Period. Period. Right. If you decide to bid $100,000 on a loose Quadrun on the first day of a 9 day auction, I think you can pretty much be almost guaranteed to win it snipers or not (unless of course someone bids higher than that)

video game addict
All the more reason for you to become a sniper then! Less time spent looking over and managing auctions. Just find what you want and add to the snipbot. You either win or you don't. Then you don't have to come here and whine.
