Ze_ro
So, can the XEGS actually act as a computer too? Or is it just a console with a keyboard? I know it was meant to be used as a console, sorta like the C-64GS... but did they actually remove the I/O ports from it, or can you still attach a disk drive and load games from there? --Zero
Atari-Jess
Yes, the XEGS is completely compatable with the XE line of computers, actually when Atari claimed that the XEGS had the most amout of games EVER, Nintendo sued them because in a way they were lying, sure it did, but you would have to load most of them from a diskdrive, and at the time Atari was only selling backorder 1050's that they were not going to manufacture, anyways, Atari lost (like they EVER win) and that XE diskdrive was released and yes, the XEGS can use a 1050 drive, it does have the ports. Hope that answers your question. (oh it can use a hard drive too)
Ze_ro
Cool! I've been wanting to get an Atari 8-bit for a while now, but all I've been finding in the stores around here are C-64's (And I already have about five of them in the basement)... whenever I see pictures of the XEGS though, it's just begging me to buy it And hey! Detachable keyboard! --Zero

The floppy drive mentioned seems interesting. I read somewhere that the cartridge slot is missing a feature that limits some of the available hardware options -- anyone know what this might mean? I know that the system was designed to cope with a tape drive, so I'm wondering if I can convert ROMs to audio and load them on an MP3 player like I'm doing with my 2600 and Cuttle Cart. I'd like to *do* something with the unit -- it's all hooked up but, heck, I barely use my second Windows PC, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the computer personality of the XEGS. Any suggestions for interesting projects?
Atari-Jess
well it CAN use any 8-bit part like diskdrives and the like, since Atari tried to push this as a video game system, i can imagine they tried to stop something to make it a little less than a computer and more of a gaming system. When I get mine I plan to use it to attempt to help me learn ASM.
