Favorite game on 8-bit

What was your favorite game on the 8-bit line?

My favorite was Ultima III. It took my brother and I two months to finish during the summer of 83. After that, I tried playing Universe, which I liked, but the disk swapping got to me and I never finished.

I also like the Enchanter/Sorcorer/Spell Breaker series.

I just got the Caverns Of Mars box/cart/man from Best Electronics. I can't wait till Christmas so that I can open and use my new joysticks.

Star Raiders for me...the first game that I played on it (and I was floored!). It seemed to accurately depict real-time 3d space battles). The smooth movement made up for the shortcomings that you couldn't collide with ships and could move to a new sector only by using hyperspace.

Loved the Ultima series as well, but I played them far less due to the amount of time needed for a single game (Ultima IV was my favorite of the series).

MULE is up there, but I would have to say "Rescue on Fractalus". That was the first video game that surprised me enough to actually jump, the first time the mutated pilot broke my window.

The next time I experienced anything like that was years later, Resident Evil for the PS.

I played that for years on my old Atari 800 which somehow stopped working in color.

So imagine how hard it was never knowing if an alien was going to pop up until it did.

As for my favorites:

Ultima III: Exodus

Zork II: The Wizzard of Frobozz

M.U.L.E.(another tough one to play sans color)

Donkey Kong

Mr. Robot's Workshop(I think that's what it's called)

Shamus

Blue Max

Lode Runner

Jumpman

Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy

Journey to the Planets

Legionnaire (though I sucked at it)

...and many more!

while i read all your faves...i must admit that every single game you guys mentioned must be added to my list above...

i forgot so many pearls....

what about "Quest for tires"? "the last starfighter" or "star raiders II" or "Spelunker" i played it for months and everytime again...or "Joust"...or....

is it not strange that so many "old games" are still in our memories? it is like your first girlfriend, 1st metallica LP, or...

heaven

ps. not to forget the game called "Self Test"... it is build in... try to boot your atari with basic on and type "BYE"... it is an easter egg... ;=) the best level is the sound level...

pick a favorite game out of the hundreds and hundreds of killer apps on the 8-bit...? I could give a list of favorites that would make this board load up for ten minutes, but here it goes...

Rescue on Fractalus-the greatest game of all time (that really needs a good update on Xbox). This game impressed me and a lot of friends back in the day. Yes, I too had my first video game shock with this game. That darn Alien with his blood-curdling scream, I still jump till this day and waiting, knowing it's coming, only makes it worse...like waiting for the toast to pop up, but you still jump everytime when you sit and stare...

My second favorite has to be Alternate Reality: the Dungeon then you can put the city after that, and all the other Lucasfilm games after that; Koronis Rift, BallBlazer, The Eidelon. Then Draconus and Zybex...then about two hundred more including most of the ones you guys listed...

Funny, I remember Quest for Tires being fun, but I don't remember much about it. But I *can* equate that first RoF "jump" memory with the first Metallica album (Ride the Lightning, what can I say, I was young then) and girlfriend (ok, the first girlfriend was more like a "what was I thinking" but deep down inside we all know what I was thinking).

Oh man, as others have said, there are simply too many great games for the Atari 8-bit to pick one favorite. Almost every game listed in this thread is one that I greatly enjoyed. But I'll make my own list also, of games that I personally remember playing quite a bit:

- Bounty Bob Strikes Back

- Alternate Reality: The Dungeon & The City

- All four Lucasfilm titles

- Boulder Dash

- Tail of Beta Lyrae

- Most of the EA Titles

(MULE, Archon, Archon II, Realm of Impossibility, Seven Cities of Gold, etc.)

- Many Infocom titles

- Star Raiders

- Gateway to Apshai

- Jumpman, Jumpman Junior

- Rainbow Walker

...and many I'm sure I'm forgetting at the moment. These lists make me want to dig down in my garage for an 8-bit and boot up many of these games (as opposed to playing them through emulators). Of course, it's Christmas Day and I'm not even home, and uhmm, I need to finish Final Fantasy X first.

And I didn't get into the Ultima series until I bought my first PC (a $3,000 Gateway 386-33DX). By then, Ultima VI was the latest Ultima, but I went back and bought *every single prior* Ultima and played 'em. Ultima III was the first Ultima I experienced on an Apple IIe at a friend's house many years ago, but I guess all the other games on the 8-bit (and later ST) distracted me until I "rediscovered" the Ultimas when I bought my PC. But now I'm off on a tangent.

Yes, yes!! Add that to mine as well, it's an awesome game. This is a wonderful thread, as it'll allow me to put together a list of all the games I must go back and play once the holiday madness is over. Keep 'em coming!

How could I forget Jumpman and Jumpman jr.? Add those to my list. Most of the other games people mentioned (Infocom Adventures, Ultima's, MULE) were on disk so I couldn't play them on my Atari 400 (Tape drive only baby!) so I played them on my Apple IIe instead. I really need to get some of these Atari only disk games since I now have a disk drive (I'm using a XEGS now). So many games to catch up on and so little time...

Oh yeah, alos add Flip & Flop to my list of favs.
