capnarrr
Is there a way to beat/get to the treasure room in the redone montezuma's revenge (the one by utopia - plays little spanish flea at the intro and writes the title out in cursive). All i see down there is a large monkey that stomps the floor. Just wondering...
Mindfield
If I'm not mistaken, that monkey is Montezuma. Unfortunately I only ever got that far in the game once, and since I died quite rapidly, I didn't actually get anywhere after that. :-P
ndary
I never succeeded to get into that room either
El Destructo
The "big" version of Montezuma's Revenge is unfinished; you can't win the game. Once you get down to the stamping god, you've pretty much seen everything. This is as far as the author got before the CES show that year. So he showed this incomplete version. Some Parker Bros. reps saw it, and the rest is history. AFAIK, Parker Bros. created the finished version (16KB) and all the ports in-house. They also changed our hero's hat, and the overall maze layout. I'd say they broke the layout pretty badly, to the point that you can cheat, but that's another story. BTW, R. Jaeger, the author, could only afford a booth in the porn section of the show. I'm sure the Parker Bros. reps were only there because they were SO dedicated to their scouting mission that they scoured the *whole* show p.s. It seems I've told this story before...is could somebody add it to a FAQ somewhere, or something?
capnarrr
Thanks for that bit of history! Most appreciated.
NE146
so it's true the 8-bit M.R. differs from the 5200 version? Because I've never heard of a large monkey and I played the 5200 version to death.
Callipygous
NE146, there are two 8-bit versions, the Utopia and the Parker Bros which, I am guessing, is also the 5200 version. Hmm, pornographic Monty
smf_4ever
Here is a silly question.. (this goes back to my youth).. does anyone have the cracked version of Mont Rev. and Spelunker? (infinate lives)... Back in my youth.. when my pop was the president of the atari piriters club at the pentagon, we had these. Just curious.. (oh.. I don't want to offend any programmers but mentioning the club above.. if so.. sorry.)lol
Mindfield
Blast! So that was the end, then. Pity. I remember after having gotten there that one time and subsequently being turned rapidly into a series of sombrero-wearing fritatas, I had a desperate need to try and get back there again so I could figure out a way past the fecal diety. I never did, of course, but the fact always haunted me, as I was certain I'd reached a milestone at that point, and that there was a lot more beyond. I guess, however, it does bring a disappointing sense of closure to the whole thing, coming to realize that becoming Monty's toe salsa was the whole point of the game... El Destructo
You don't *have* to die every time the god stamps, you know. I mean, if you die whenever he shakes the ground, all you have to do is make sure you're not standing on it when he does so. Also, the theme song is a rendition of "Whipped Cream" by Herb Alpert, from the album of the same name which I'm sure you've all come across while searching the thrift stores for Atari stuff. It was also used as the theme song for the 70's game show "The Dating Game." [ 05-12-2002: Message edited by: El Destructo ]
Mindfield
THAT'S where I've heard it before! Wow, I'd forgotten all about that. Great. Now whenever I see Panama Joe jump out on to the screen during the introduction, some deep, recessed part of my psyche will be expecting Jim Lange to jump out and introduce him to three lucky bachelorettes... El Destructo
I just got some new thrift store finds (records, not games) and discovered that my song I.D. was wrong. The song used as a theme for both Montezuma's Revenge and The Dating Game is Spanish Flea. Sorry for the mistake. You may now resume scrounging your local thrift store's toy *and* record sections. Thank you.
