Yes. All Atari 8-bit carts from the 400/800, XL and XE(GS) series will work on the 130xe (except for about half a dozen early 800 carts). All XE carts will work on an XL with 64k as well and some will even work on the 800, but not all. But the 130Xe is definately compatible with 99% of 800/XL carts and 100% of XEGS carts.

Now, there is also a "translator" cart out there somewhere that will allow the incompatible 800 carts to work, or, if you get your hands on file versions of the cart roms, you can use the translator disk before loading them and those files will work. So it is possible to use 100% of carts and other software made for all 8-bit Atari's on the 130XE if you work at it.

do you know what xegs cartridges do not work on the 400/800 computers?.. i wonder if its got to do something with the bank switching routine..

The reason is because some of the XE games require 64K. The 400/800 not having that much memory without third party upgrades/mods.

I don't think the 400/800s are wired in such a way that you can add that last 16K of memory. That 16K block is normally where the OS ROM resides. To use it on the XL/XEs you have to temporarily swap out the OS.

Banking on the XL/XEs are done via the lines previously servicing the extra 2 joystick ports. So 400/800 expanded memory is different.

I know a one point Atari was planning on coming out with a 64k module for the 800. And I know that there were third party modules larger than the Atari 16k ones. I think the only way to tell for sure is to get someone who has an 800 with 64k and have them try out the games.
