best batteries?

Oh my goodness, how many hours do you think you've used it for? I could see them lasting three years if you very rarely use your Lynx with the battery pack.

As for rechargeables, according to the Lynx FAQ:

quote
With alkaline batteries, the reasonable average battery life is 5 hours.  (4 hours with the original Lynx)  The Lynx can run off rechargeable Ni-Cad batteries, but average battery life drops drastically to 1.5 hours per recharge (1 hour for the original Lynx).  Your mileage may vary.

Personally, I would try Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries, Ni-Cads are now a thing of the past. I used NiMH batteries in my last digital camera and they worked out quite well. If AA Lithium Ion batteries are now available I would get those instead. But I have no idea how well these types of batteries work in the Lynx. I would hope the Lithium Ion batteries would last longer than Alkaline, but who knows. At least they can be recharged hundreds of times and don't have the memory effect that Nicads have.

Has anyone tried NiMH or Lithium Ion batteries in the Lynx?

Better yet, those D batteries can put even that pink bunny to a shame. I bought my battery packs back when you could still get them new at Toys R Us. Still using the first set of batteries I bought with it 6 or 7 years ago. I fear the Lynx's power port would fail long before the batteries do.

I think this is the reason why we never saw any battery packs for any other consoles. They last so long it outlives the console itself.

(Anyone up to making dual "D" holder for GBA?)

Two independent confirmations that the D-cell battery pack has exceptional longetivity. Fortunately I picked up one of these at the Classic Gaming Expo two months ago, but that was so I could take nice pictures of it for the AtariAge Lynx section. You guys have convinced me that I should really run out and buy some D cell batteries and actually *use* it (although I'd still like to try NiMH or LIon batteries to see how they fare).

While the D pack is nice, it's not something I've ever envisioned I'd want to lug around with me. I mean, a game system is supposed to be portable, right? Having a battery pack that's as big (and much heavier!) than the game unit itself seems to defeat the whole purpose of having a portable game system! But I guess if you're on a plane, or in a car or something along those lines then it's not quite as bad. I bet having that battery pack in your carry-on luggage these days will cause your bags to get searched.

Well, as I always keep my Lynx in its carry case, the power pack is easy to just carry along. Since the Lynx is too big for carrying in anything but the biggest of pockets, I would need the case anyway. It also makes the Lynx itself nice and light, since there's no batteries in it weighing it down.

Good point, I hadn't thought of it that way (not having to put batteries in the Lynx). I assume when you say "carrying case" you're talking about the larger carrying case that has space to put games in the flap? I used to have one of these but I seem to have lost it (along with the Lynx II and all the games stored in it) when I moved from Texsa to California a year ago. I don't remember if I picked up another one when I was at CGE this year, but if I didn't I'll have to track one down. I do have the smaller Lynx pouch, but that's obviously not large enough for the Lynx and the battery pack!

I use Nihm rechargables in my Lynx. I bought a universal recharger from Rayovac and that's what 4 of the rechargables are:Rayovac. I also have two Nihm energizers. I have never had any problems with them, but I've only had them for about a year, and the Lynx is used several times a month. I generally only play it for about 1-2 hours, which is about what the charge lasts for. I have also used disposable batteries in the Lynx that I have recharged, they generally only last for about half an hour though...used only when my rechargables are recharging. I can generally get about 4-5 charges out of disposables before stop taking a charge or start to leak. I'd use the "d" cell battery pack, but it plugs in throught the AC adapter port which is broken on my lynx.

Some times they do leak, then you stop recharging them.

Yes, they tell you not to, because they may overheat and leak, and yes, they do do this sometimes, but it's not the end of the world. Your hand is not going to melt off if you touch it and all you have to do is wipe out the "juice" from the recharger. Their idea of "overheating" is getting pretty warm, but it's not hot enough to burn you or set fire to anything. But most times they can be recharged successfully several times and work well. These are the latest akaline batteries that I'm recharging. Also, my recharger is made to recharge several different types of batteries including nickel, nicad, alkaline, whatever. But some of it is a case of the "evil corporation" wanting to make money.

Well it looks like I have two options.

The "D" power pack or NiMH rechargeables.

I think I'll have better luck getting the "D" pack at a local shop.

How expensive are NiMH batteries and the charger?

What's a good brand name?

Any other info is helpfull.. thanks..
