intvgene
Hey... I just thought that I would pass this on for anyone who hasn't seen it already. It's the old Atari 65XE vs. Commodore 64 commercial. It's in MOV format and about 1 meg. http://217.153.29.18/%7Emichal/usa/atari01.so.mov
Bryan
Wow... I don't remember that one. Its claims are a little inflated IMHO (and I prefer the Atari). I'm sure Jack found it amusing. Remember those guys who've been telling you how much better the 64 is? Well they're here to tell you how wrong they were. -Bry
Mindfield
I have that commercial in my collection... grabbed from the dearly lamented Commercial Archive back in the day. I still miss them...:-)
tyranthraxus
I havn't seen that ad in about 15+ years. Given what I now know about Atari-Commodore ownership that ad is quite funny! Thanx!
ApolloBoy
I don't know why Tramiel would pit the 65XE against his own brainchild.

Serguei2
LOL An XE65 is better than c64? Which atari 8bit game is pushing the computer to its limit? Myself, I played Into the eagle's nest both in c64 and a8b. A8b looks ugly (to me) while the c64 version looks better. Serguei2

TMR
8bit game is pushing the computer to its limit? Myself, I played Into the eagle's nest both in c64 and a8b. A8b looks ugly (to me) while the c64 version looks better. It's probably best i keep out of the "which was better" argument since i have such an obvious bias (18 years of writing C64 code... =-) but i would like to point out that Into The Eagle's Nest doesn't really push the C64 all that much, a fact that is backed up by there being a Plus/4 port that is essentially identical despite the C64's younger brother has no hardware sprites. Serguei2
It's probably best i keep out of the "which was better" argument I agree with you but since the commercial add tells us the xe65 is better than c64, I have to post some questions? The walking robot in the add was taken from an atari 8bit demo. I impressived to see it but none of a8b games I know have the same quality of graphics. Bryan
Is there any quick plug-in or any other format that commerical is in besides .MOV ? Or do you have to download the Apple Movie viewer to watch it because I really wanna see this commerical. Yeah' date=' you need Quicktime to see it. I don't like installing all this stuff either. Most of it is constantly trying to "call-home" too. [i']Do you want the new version? Do you want special offers? Upgrade to "Pro" now and save 10%!!![/i] The ad has two kids typing on computers. The announcer says that buying a 64 is smart, but buying a 65XE is smarter because: They have the same amount of memory. They both have typewriter-style keyboards. But the XE has better graphics (debatable). And better sound (not true). More colors (true). The XE is faster (true). And has 1000's of titles "including the best games" (okay, depends on what you read into that) And finally, the XE starts at less than $100 and blows the 64 away (I don't think either "blows the other away"). Anyway, as the announcer is listing off this stuff, the Atari kid's head is expanding. When he says "blows the 64 away", the 64 kid's hat flies off. Overall it's a cheap looking commerical (looks kinda like a college-level project). And if Domino's can sue Papa John's for using the words "better pizza", then Commodore probably had a case here. -Bry
sack-c0s
regardless of the C64 vs Atari argument (Although I'd have to side with the 64 too) I don't think either company could pull an advert out of it's ass to save its life
Tempest
I'm a hardcore Atari guy, but if given the choice back then I think even I would take a C-64. BTW where can I get the disk image for that cool robot demo? Tempest
belboz
The CES demo was a favorite of mine way back when it first came out. I've attached it to this message. I liked it so much I use it as my avatar! The ship in the demo is cool too, but the robot was my favorite. BTW where can I get the disk image for that cool robot demo? emkay
Remembering... back in 1983/84 I would ever prefer the ATARI XL. When the C128 came along, I would have bought this, because the C128 was a real advanced Computer compared to "older" 8-bits, and the techniques of the ATARI 8-Bits still stuck... so I never would have bought an XE. But instead of an C128 I bought in 1987 an ST then and in 1989 an AMIGA 2000 ...

TMR
Is there anything more to the demo other than the robot? Yup, let it run to the end of the music, the Atari logo will reappear and then the spaceship part.

Serguei2
And how about diskette capacity? C64 has 170k each disk but how about atari 8b? Serguei2
DracIsBack
And how about diskette capacity? C64 has 170k each disk but how about atari 8b? Serguei2 It's been a while since I've had a disk drive (Only have a base XEGS now) but I think it could only store 127K or so a diskette. At least that's what I remember under DOS 2.5. Maybe some of the others DOSes such as SpartaDOS and DOS XE allowed 360K disk formatting. Any Atari buffs remember?
Goochman
810 - 70K 1050 - 127K (lame) XF351 - 360K - was supposed to be available for the XE line but came out late there were many mods to 'fix' the 1050 for 180K disk formatting. However, For base to base comparisions you could grow corn waiting for the C64 drive to load
