Newbie: Atari Computer suggestions

Hi,

 

I'm coming in from the angle of the Atari 2600 and from my current computer a PC clone. Anyways, I don't know a lot about the Atari line of computers, so hopefully you guys can fill me in.:

 

I'm thinking of getting an Atari Computer that I can use in my studio for recording various audio tracks. Is there a specific Atari computer I should be looking for or will a few various models do the trick?

You might need to be more specific as to what exactly you're going to do with it. As you stated, the only computer that could do what you seem to want at an acceptable quality is the Atari Falcon, which is probably the most expensive out of all of the old Atari systems. None of the 8-bit computers are suitable for the task, unless you mean using sound effects generated by the computer and recording those.

Yeah, I have Activision's Music Studio for the 8bit, and there are 10 insruments that all sound the same.

 

The songs that come with the software sound cool, but there is no way to write a good song on there with only a few different sounds.

The ST is the atari machine i most associate with music, It having a reasonable Yamaha chip and midi interface built in, and Cube base (?)manipulation software. certainly you can communicate between the two machines in numerous ways, the easiest is of course that STs use an IBM compatable 720k floppy disk format. But i'm sure midi to midi couldbe a possibility as well.

 

Yes 8-bits had capabilities in sound as well but usualy only via rare/expensive now 3rd party add ons. And communicating with PCs you are looking at whats called an SIO2PC cabel.
