Newbie Wishes to discuss ADVENTURE

Hi,

I'm brand new to this board. I'm no programmer, but about 12 months ago I downloaded PCAE.

When I was a kid I fell in love with ADVENTURE. My brother (now a programmer) discovered Mr Robinnett's Easter Egg - I think he may have been the first.

Anyway, I loved the game so much as a kid that I wanted another, expanded, version of the game. Same deal - get the chalice to the Gold castle - but have a different maze and general layout.

Has anyone ever thought of making this? It's obviously not a new game as such, but it does have potential.

Just think - trying to find the red key in the maze in the blue castle so you can get the black key in the red castle!!!

Give Indenture a run...VGR created a dos game that adds two more game selections that offer a sh*tload of new screens, a Green castle, a blue dragon, an object to paralyse the bat, a new "secret dot", & hours of wandering...and the easter egg screen is where they begin.

The homesite appears to be down...check your mail.

You can get a copy of Indenture (the pc remake of Adventure)here:

http://www.classicgaming.com/remakes/

It's pretty darn good. However, the only thing about Indenture is that it's so darn big.. almost no one has solved it (or figured out what to do with the tokens). And if anyone has, they certainly aren't talking.

And even though the game is over 5 years old, don't bother asking author Craig Pell anything either. From what I've seen, he apparently is still content to merely give "hints"... *sigh*

After seeing my orignal post, a very nice fellow emailed me a copy of Indenture. After playing for about 2 hours I go to the internet to find the maps. No luck yet, and from what some of you have said it will be hard.

I found the second "dot", managed to get into the green castle, find the shiny numbers and then accidentally re-load a previous game when I was trying to save the current one! Arg!

One difference VGR put into the game is that the bat can sense objects in the frame next to one it is in. If you trap the bat in, say, the yellow castle then walk up to the entrance with an object, the bat comes OUT of the castle and takes it! The Dragons also seem to do the same.

Does anyone know how to capture the screen shot so a map can be made?

I managed to solve both of the extra games (4 and 5) in Indenture a number of years ago. This included figuring out what the tokens do. I also managed to get to the "last" screen, which you'll know what it is if you get to it.

As far as the tokens go, I won't give the secret away, but just give some thought to what they are and how they operate and their purpose will come to you - mostly like in the form of "I can't believe I missed that!"

See what I mean.. I've been seeing comments like that since 1996 or something. In this day when almost every video game in existance has a walkthrough/faq at gamefaqs.com or similar, Indenture's solution remains a secret. I wish someone would just say it already or publish the solution as there's no way I'm friggin playing through that game again! heheh

Sorry guys, I don't think that Indenture (games 4-5) has been mapped out yet on the net...I started to do it on paper two years ago & gave up (and had to go back to work). As far as creating pics on-the-fly, there are plenty of screen capture tsr's available on the net (course, you'll have to do the sorting on your own...as well as editing pics of "dark" rooms to show the walls).

neilinoz--

Remember, the dots can be used to pass any panels in the map (the original dot for right panels, the second one for lefties)...and there are quite a few of those! A dead-end that is a B*tch to get to is NOT a dead-end. As far as the tokens are concerned, just don't even wonder about it and it will come to you (as Nostalgic said, usually with a slap to the forehead).

"I wonder...", said La Faoge, "...just how much Molly knew?"

Nukey,

Thanks for the tip about the second dot, I hadn't actually worked that one out yet.

The problem that Indenture has is that it is just SO BIG. As a kid I remember getting a bit confused going around the original adventure map, but it eventually became second nature to me. Indenture has so many rooms that you sometimes forget where you've been - the fact that I am hopeless with maps doesn't help either!

I tried using the "print Screen" button on my keyboard, which supposedly sends the screen onto the clipboard. But I think VGR must have spiked it or something because all I got was text.

I really have to be committed to playing this game in order to find out all the secrets and so on, but at the moment I'm finding it both frustrating and repetitive. I don't want easy answers, just the ability to map things properly!!!

VGR didn't spike it... it really is all text.

Indenture is a text-mode game. The standard font used to display text-mode characters was modified to show objects instead.

Customizing the character set was a common technique used in creating games for older computers. For example, take any Antic or ANALOG magazine and you'll probably find a game that uses altered characters in one of the text modes.

neilinoz--

Apart from creating a detailed map of EVERY screen, the best way not to get lost in adventure games is to jot down the basics of the screens (draw a small box & indicate which directions have exits, proceed to the next screen and repeat). This works especially well in Indenture, since the mazes are fairly easy to find your way around in, and many of the areas are intentionally repetitive. And in the center of the boxes you can put landmark details in (like "start/yellow maze" or "r.panel"). A lot less time-consuming if you just want to play the game (I think that mapping out ten successive rooms with north-south exits is kinda overkill...a single box with the caption "vertical-10 rooms" does the same thing).
