Top 5 collections

It was fun reading about everyone's favorite 5 games but who do you think are the top 5 2600 collectors worldwide? I could be wayoff but I'll take a stab and guess the following:

1. Marco

2. Ianoid

3. JerryG

4. Jeff Rothkopf

5. John Hardie

A few years ago, Leonard Herman (Author of Phoenix...) said he only needed 2 games to complete his US released 2600 collection. That puts him #1 in my book.

Saying who the top collector worldwide is a really iffy area - simply because there are people who are collecting NTSC carts only. Getting all 600 some NTSC carts is MUCH more difficult than amassing 2000 carts in general, in my opinion, but 2000 carts is still VERY impressive.

i'd have to say, marc oberhäuser is probably first after seeing a video about him and having him on the phone a few time.

he's got more protos than tempest, and probably more boxed games than marco.

while for the brazil carts and the weird stuff, i'd say marco is no. 1

BTW ...

I was looking for the blushing smiley, but it isn't there, so I just have to say.. thanks for the honour. I don't think you are right, but thanks anyway

I have often thought about this. Of course, most of us collect because it's fun, but there is undeniably some kind of competition in it as well.

But, and the replies to your posting already make that clear, there are so many ways to rank collections. Some examples of features that could be taken into account:

Complete NTSC collection (complete PAL is well *really* impossible!)

Most prototypes (of released / unreleased games)

Most boxed games

Most complete label variation collection

Highest percentage of games actually found in the wild by collector himself

Most unusual items / memorabilia

Collection of consoles / controllers

I've always wanted to make a website where we would first hold polls on which features we think are important, and to which extent. After a ranking system has been established, people would be able to enter their collections and see what rank they would attain. If their collection would grow, they could update their listing, to see if they would get a higher rank.

Just some thoughts on this intrigueing topic...

Cheers,

Marco

You may be naming these people because they are relatively well-known. I know at least a handful of people though who operate in the background, that have 2600 collections that make me drool.

I mean, boxed copies of Malagai, Gauntlet, Video Life, River Patrol, Music Machine, and Air Raid, or a PGP... Mmmm...

Cheers,

Marco

... sad to let this topic die... c'mon you guys, post!

I want to hear some opinions:

  • do you even care about the competition?

  • what would be good criteria to measure the value (not $$) of a collection?

  • would an Atari 2600 Collection Ranking website be a good idea?

Cheers,

Marco

Quite a good one, never thought about it. I can see what you're talking about, though I'm not sure it's a very strong criterion.

Isn't it like undisovered beaches that only a handful of people visit versus the crowded beaches on the Spanish costas or any US equivalent of those?

I mean, the white sandy beaches of small islands in the Pacific (unless they have been used as a nuclear test ground...) would certainly rank higher, even though only 0.00000000000001% of the world's population would ever come there to experience its wealth?

I agree, someone who owns, the sole 2600 Pink Panther proto and shares it by dumping and releasing the ROM, would defenitely rank as a nicer person. But would his collection be worth less? (not talking $$)

I have no idea, to be honest. Have to give it some more thought. Very intrigueing idea you put forward here Ben

Any others?

Cheers,

Marco

Honeslty, I know I could never impress most or any of you guys, but it is fun to impress my friends and stuff who had an Atari 2600 back in the day.. They're all like, "Man I never even knew that existed.", "What were those guys smoking" stuff like that.

That's when my collection really pays off

play long and prosper!

ps: with all this canal three stuff and all the knowledge, i'd say you're my knew "king". i'll bow down at the eurocon

BTW, i am turning 30 in a month ....been hunting 2600 since 97 again ... after finding a pack of boxed activision carts and falling in love with the design.

talking about rankings, Activision have defenitely my no. 1 design concept with their colored stripes ...

Hmm, what about...

  • the beautifully molded cases and big plastic boxes of Homevision?

  • Those unbelievable gems of 2600 collecting by Video Gems?

  • the mesmerizing golden Technovision boxes?

Yummie...

Cheers,

Marco

do you even care about the competition?

yea soem what , it is more of a motivational inspiration than competition i must do it.

what would be good criteria to measure the value (not $$) of a collection?

good one how easy it is to get (accessable) also how many people drool over your collection ( its always the iceing on the cake)

would an Atari 2600 Collection Ranking website be a good idea?

yea maybe if atari age server allows it they shoudl add it or link it to another site that is a branch off of this one. (Atariage collection Rankings)

not too bad, but not very accessible to the main public. not even to me, i just have that reprocart, but not any boxed one whille i found many loose titles.

same here, i haven't even seen any TV box, and for the videogems, the pict you posted earlier was the first where i could distincly see these boxes ...

then:

all of these companies have never produced any of the hot following items:

incredible patches, overlay for the 4/6 switch (space shuttle) color manual and box, nice posters ....

that's why now after thinking again, i will say once more that activision was the company that rules!

it still does! i may be wrong, but they're the ones doin' tony hawk, right?

I'd say the scarcity only adds to the beauty of these games...

Hah, patches! Who needs those? The concept is simple: cart, box, manual. Three items that let you show what you can do. All the rest is just to distract attention from the real thing. And trust me, no Activision box or manual comes even close to Video Gems.

Cheers,

Marco

BTW: Video Gems games came with lovely patches packed-in, you didn't even have to send in a picture of your high-score. They just trusted you to not wear your "badge of honour" untill you reached that score

I have scans of the award stickers for two of the Video Gems games on the picture section of my website, in case anyone wants to see them.

BTW Marco, as you also seem to have Mission Survive, can you please describe it's gameplay? I have never seen this game, not even as a ROM image.

Thanks, Eckhard Stolberg

You must know I haven´t played it for a while, the car you are controlling looks a bit like the car in Gashog, gameplay as far as i can remember is almost identical to Moonpatrol.

I do believe it´s an original game, in the sence they programmed it from scratch, so it´s not moonpatrol with altered graphics.

I will give it a go tonight to see the differences.

Sandy.
