khryssun
Reading an old magazine I found a small article about the "Atari 3600", the successor of the atari 2600. I think it was a temporary project name for the 5200 or the 7800... Someone may confirm this ? DanBoris
According to Atari-History.com, the 3600 name was used for a couple prototype systems. There was a successor to the 2600 called a 3600 but this project was scrapped. The 7800 also started out being called 3600.
Ze_ro
If I remember correctly (And there's a good chance I don't), the 3600 was meant to be the successor to the 2600... however, it's goofy 10-bit architecture made it difficult to program, and it was eventually scrapped, and replaced with the 5200 (Which was NOT based on the 3600 I believe). I'm not completely clear on the relation between the 7800 and 3600... they might have fixed the problems with the 3600 and evolved it into the 7800, or they might have just reused the name as a prototype name. --Zero
