Unfortunatly/Fortunately none of my Family or friends have ever came acrossed anything really rare. Best was maybe StarTrek SOS and my mom found a nearly perfect Parker Brothers 007...

Even so, when it comes to family or friends I'll pay the real prices and even show them where I'm getting prices from.. The amount I save in shipping is worth it. It's kind of like they are working on commission.

I've told all my friends and family that I'd pay 1/2 of DP5 price guide for anything they find me (whether I need it or not). I've actually got a lot of great stuff this way, because they'll now pick up anything they find at garage sales, flea markets or GW for me.. I've even had friends who were near-broke go thrifting at all the local GWs to find some carts for cheap and make a few bucks. It's so much easier when you have people helping you. I've also given away a lot of common carts and 2600 consoles to friends to get them hooked on collecting as well.

lets try to be a little honest here please!!. You know if you had a friend that had a game like chase the chuck wagon, or Swordquest Waterworld mint or even still sealed in the box, you would tell them that they are only worth about twenty or thirty bucks and you would take the games from them.

If they are a friend of mine I am always 100% honest with them. After all, they are your friend.

On the opther hand, if it is just some random Flea Market vendor, I'll try to get something for as cheap as possible.

Is this hypocritical, or just survival of the fittest? Judge for yourselves.

yes, i must admit ... but only a few times for understandable reasons ...

1) to the guy that tried to sell me pac man and asteroids for 5$ (in worst condition). i just grabbed the rare stuff and lied when he asked if it's rare stuff ... just said "i don't know, but i remember them from childhood so they can't be that rare". the fleamarket people in germany discovered ebay, and since then, ask for extremely high prices for their stuff. it always leads to long discussions before you get a reasonable discount for picking more stuff ... that made me getting back to ebay, as it's not much more expensive anymore ...

2) to collectors that always want everything for a dollar but ask impressive price for their own trade items ... i have traded an obelix cart to a guy that wanted so much for his own items, that he got the PAL version for the value of the ntsc version. after all, his stuff came up to the value of the PAL version, so i didn't really rip him and it was a fair trade.

3) to my girlfriend, saying my collection is worth more than 30.000$. so she doesn't get too crazy about all the space we loose in our flat, just because of my atarimania ...

if you're christian, then just forgive me for what i've done ...

otherwise, i think in these situations it's not a big problem. i think it's ok, as long as you "just don't say the whole truth" and play the naive guy, instead of really lying ..

while you should never do that on trades with serious collectors ... i have many us collectors i do trades with, and it's so nice to get all the stuff that wasn't released over here in germany. they're happy to get all the (rare in usa) PAL stuff they can't get their hands on (cheaply). so we do trades again and again ... and enlarge our collections to the max!

i'd never risk this opportunity with lying about one cart. just think how much talk there is on this message board. your lie would be discovered with a few posts here ... would be just too stupid.

so only use it, when you don't do any damage to the collector's community or friends/nice people.

you know most my family understands that things are only worth something if you can find the right person. so for the most part they will sell to me really cheap or in alot of cases just give it to me.
