Albert
I have temporarily disabled editing of messages, as the actual act of editing a message was causing the forums to slow down quite a bit (especially when the site is busy and multiple people are editing messages simultaneously). This is related to the way the search engine is setup in phpbb (the forum software we are using) and the large number of messages we have in the forums (over 600,000). I would prefer not to prune the forums (delete large amounts of messages) to help alleviate the problem, as there is a wealth of knowledge that has been posted over the years, and being able to search through 3+ years of posts is very useful. However, until we can figure out a solution to the edit problem that doesn't eat up as many resources on the server, or we move to Invision Board 2.0, editing will only be enabled for moderators and administrators. I know this is an inconvenience, but it will only be short term. ..Al

sku_u
That's going to turn the Marketplace Forum into an unmanageable mess, especially the recommended traders thread that many people, including myself, use as a quick reference when working out a trade or transaction. bjk7382
That doesn't seem very smart. We have many high score clubs going on where people edit their messages many times over the week to keep them updated, what are we supposed to do now? I dindn't notice any of the slowness, but wouldn't just waning people not to edit unless it is really needed allevieate most of this? bjk7382
I see Ze_ro is now a moderator on the 2600 forum. But his profile still looks like a normal quadrunner. That would fix the HS clubs if goochman was also made moderator on the 8bit forum. I don't see it as a big deal, but it seems like it was working fine before. I am sure Al knows best though, maybe this will give him the push he needs to get the forum switched to the new one
jeepnut24
Editting a message was wicked slow even on a high speed connection. What about trying to prune any un needed Non informational posts?
Bruce Tomlin
I was wondering why edit was always so slow. I thought it was just a sleep() call to discourage people from editing their messages too often. That sucks that it (probably unnecessarily) does nasty database-fu which hoses the board's performance.
Bruce Tomlin
Aha. The site I was comparing edit speeds with was running Invision 1.2.

We have many high score clubs going on where people edit their messages many times over the week to keep them updated, what are we supposed to do now? I will address these on a case-by-case basis, I know that the high score clubs will be the biggest problem, and I'll make sure that those who are running those contests can still edit those messages. I dindn't notice any of the slowness, but wouldn't just waning people not to edit unless it is really needed allevieate most of this? It typically affects the forum for short periods of time (less than five minutes), but during that time the forums will sometimes time out. Since I am logged into the forum frequently (or at least browsing, even if I am not logged on), I see this behavior often and I can also check other information to see what the current server load is and what is causing it. It has slowly been getting worse as the number of messages in the forum increase. ..Al
Albert
Aha. The site I was comparing edit speeds with was running Invision 1.2. Yes, editing messages with Invision is more or less instantaneous, even with large forums. The Invision database design seems to be thought out a bit better, especially with regards to the whole search infrastructure, which is what is causing the problems with slow editing of posts. ..Al
Bryan
I noticed that sometimes the system seems to hang for a minute or two. Now I'm going to have to control my itchy Submit finger. -Bry

Ze_ro
Aside from the High Score Clubs and the marketplace forums and stuff, I don't see this being that big a problem... just get used to using that "Preview" button instead, and read your posts once or twice before hitting submit. That should be enough to catch any spelling/grammar errors. --Zero

Mindfield
Bah. 20+ years of BBS history and you'd think they'd have figured out how to write forum software by now. :-) Awell ... I did notice the long delays in many forums when editing posts and figured it had something to do with extended lookups 'n stuff, given the sheer volume of messages in the forums. I really don't think pruning the boards is an acceptable answer. Besides all the great information that's been posted in the past, what would all the dumpster divers do for bumping ancient topics? :-)
