Scoring Points in Missile Command - Yes, after 999,995

Hints and Tips
As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? Well no problem, because AtariAge has a typed copy of the manual available online right over here.

What's that? You're too damn lazy to click that link? Well fine, here's the hints that that the manual gives:
  • You may fire up to three defense missiles simultaneously. After pressing the controller (fire) button, move to the next enemy site and fire again. Do not wait for the explosion before moving.
[*]Once a city is destroyed you no longer can defend it, so concentrate only on your missile base and saved cities. Ignore enemy fire aimed at cities already destroyed.
[*]Smart enemy cruise missiles are easiest to destroy if your target control is directly on them. When it is directly on them, the enemy cannot detect your ABMs.
    (the manual)
Aim and fire three missiles at the highest part of the screen when game play first begins. Press Reset before the missiles explode. The missiles will remain in view and a varying number points will be added to your score after they explode. (Note: Please do not submit scores that were obtained by using this tactic!) (AtariAge)
Select game 13 and allow the incoming missiles to reach your cities, and fire all your missiles without scoring any points. The city on the right side will turn into "RF", the initials of programmer Rob Fulop. (AtariAge)
One tactic I use is defending one city and one city only when I get to the more difficult levels. Also make sure the one city you are saving is to the far left or far right. That way you only have to defend the missles coming from one side instead of defending the cross fire. (homerwannabee)

IMO it is better do defend a city that is closest to your base. When the city is too far away, you either loose your missiles or the city. (Thomas Jentzsch)
Here are some tips:
  • When the missles are coming down, be sure to shoot ahead of them.
[*]Remember you can shoot down two missles with one shot if aligned right.
[*]When it becomes daytime it will start to get extremly hard.
[*]The bombs are worth big time points, so even if all your cities are destroyed be sure to attack the bombs dropping down, if you're close enough you may be able to get an extra city and extend the game.
[*]Also remember that this game was played with the track ball in the arcade. It might be wise to bring out the track ball for this game.
    (homerwannabee)
Some tips from jedijeff:
  • Try to protect the 2 cities closest to your base so you won't have too far to move to defend them. Remember, if your base gets hit, you lose your current stack of missiles, so don't stray too far.
[*]Don't go crazy on the shots, conserve ammo. You still get points for unused missiles.
[*]It will take a little practice to get the timing down for the cruise missiles. If you shoot too early and it backs up, wait a moment and shoot again just a little higher than your last shot.
[*]Knowing which incoming missiles are dangerous and which ones aren't helps a lot, so try to pay attention to those angles.
[*]If you do lose your last city try to score as much as possible but make sure your shots count. Unused missiles are worth more than a missed shot.
    (jedijeff)
My tip for hitting the smart missiles is to time your shot so that it makes a direct hit with the smart missile. This way it gets destroyed on contact and does not have a chance to jump up and down to avoid the blast. I wait until the smart missile is roughly an inch above the targeting device and shoot.

This takes timing but with practice you will get a feel for the timing. (the 5th ghost)
Even more tips:
  • Smart bombs never miss. They will always hit one of the 7 targets you are defending. Unlike missles which can miss.
[*]Sometimes its better to let your launch pad get hit if you have only 1 or 2 missles left in the current load. Especially if it means saving a city.
[*]You can only have 3 interceptors active at one time. Always try to keep one in reserve. Fire at regular intervals so that just as you fire the 3rd missle the 1st is finishing exploding making another shot available.

Good luck everyone!
