Atari TV commercials from 1981!

In case you haven't seen them yet, I posted Atari's commercials for the 2600 and 8-bit computers on the 'net.

Classic Atari Commercials

They're in QuickTime format. I posted these back in '96, when I encoded them from an original videotape of a TV special called "Computers Are People Too."

Several sites have, um "borrowed" my work without asking and used it to sell ads. I won't mention any names *cough ifilm.com cough* Don't be fooled by lame imitations!

Just wanted you-all to get them from the source. You're the reason I posted them in the first place, anyway!

Enjoy,

ok, thats two "i'd buy"'s

maybe someone could address this as my sales friend who i duscussed this with and would put the deal together for me had one concern: copyright. are these commercials considered public domain?

but, lets get the ball rolling. i can start a spreadsheet. just start emailing me where to look for highest quality classic commercials on the web and i can begin compiling. i have a friend who will do the cd/dvd mastering and if we decide to go the dvd route, can even do menus with chapter stops...

as for costs, barring any licensing issues, it's gonna be cheap (sub 1.00 for the raw dvd, bump it to sub 2.00 with front/backliners). maybe we can offer this as a 'freebie' for next years cge paid admission!

thoughts?

Whoa there, kids. It might be fun to distribute this stuff, and many people would pay good money for it, but it doesn't belong to you or me. They belong to Infogrames, the current owner of Atari's intellectual property.

Just last week, a filmmaker needed one of these ads for a documentary. She did the right thing and got usage rights from Infogrames. Trouble is, Infogrames has the rights, but not the actual material. Seems Atari wasn't so diligent about keeping their historical files.

So, she had to locate an amateur historian, which would be me As it happens, my videotape of a TV broadcast is the highest quality copy she could find in world.

Now, am I going to juice her for big $$$? No. My only contribution was recognizing that the footage was rare and worth preserving.

I once posted low-res QuickTime movies of the ads on the 'net, But I only got away with that because either 1) Infogrames doesn't know about it, or 2) I wasn't selling them.

So, I refuse to profit, or help anyone else profit, from these ads. I may, however, post higher-quality movies that are encoded to prevent saving.

Sorry...I can't afford a trial lawyer.

As an aside to this... Having been in the CD/DVD replication business, I've been toying with compiling either a video CD or DVD and having them produced (yes, I still have contacts ). So, would there be interest here? Maybe have these things at next years CGE (which I WILL go to!)? Hell, the cost of getting these done is relatively cheap, perhaps have it as a giveaway even...

el destructo, calm down, i'm not gonna step on any toes here. my idea (and it is JUST that at the moment) would be to absolutely do this as non-profit. this is just in "bouncing around my brain" phase but what i would like to do is contact the people who run cge. i know that at 1,000 pieces, the cost will be just about two bucks for the dvd. so, i need to contact the cge folk and see if they are even open to this idea but maybe charge an extra 3-5 bucks per ticket at next years show with all PROFIT of the disc being donated to charity.

this isn't a money making thing, just something i'd like to do for the community. and yes, i do realize that i would need to get permission from infogames, blue sky (intellivision), activison and any other companies that we would need to include on the disc...

i'm just simply throwing out an idea and if we can make a 1k-4k donation to a charity, all the better...

But if he 'did the right thing' as you say and gets permission and/or a license from Infogrames, would you allow the use of your copies of the material?
Sure! In that case, no problem.

d8thstar's jumping ahead to producing and distributing plans, without mentioning rights, set my alarms off. Sorry.

Dealing with these sneaky, faceless corporate wankers has really put me on edge. I guess I don't have to worry here; fans always seem to do the right thing.
