2600JR Joysticks

I've noticed, after looking through the site, that the Atari 2600 was supposed to have the standard upside-down T shaped classic 2600 joysticks.

The version I got for my tenth birthday in 1986 had an Atari 7800-style 'proline' versions, with two buttons which seemed to do much the same thing.

Was this a UK-only thing, or something else? I haven't seen any other 2600s with these joysticks.

The standard Proline 2600 joysticks were released in the US as well with some 2600 Jr. consoles (not all AFAIK?). Both buttons do exactly the same thing, which is a great leap from the Standard VCS stick - simply becauase it allows the playter to choose to play right or left-handed.

In that case I can feel less guilty about dumping the whole lot in the bath (I was a strange child) and ruining it.

The Proline controllers make fantastic laser guns if you hold them upside down and tuck the cable into your belt loops. Not that I do this kind of thing often.

it probably depends if it was built in taiwan, china, honkong, usa or ireland.

and the year can be relevant too.

i know many variations:

junior case-like box, silver, atari jr pict with proline controller, 32-In-One cart included, with yellow sticker

junior bigger box, silver, atari jr pict with proline controller

junior case-like box, silver, atari jr pict with joypad

junior case-like box, silver, atari jr pict with joypad and 32-In-One cart included, with yellow spanish sticker

and those i don't have:

Junior in red box (usa)

Junior in yellow box (australia)

"junior bigger box, silver, atari jr pict with proline controller"

Aha. That must have been the one I had. No free game, unfortunately. And in 1986 2600 games were hard to come by in the UK.

One thing I found was that 'Wizard of Wor', which worked on my friend's older-style Mk3 2600 (the old-style case but without the wood panelling) didn't work on my 2600JR. Don't know why.

Those 7800-style joysticks were also released with the Sears Video Arcade II.

Speaking of the Sears Video Arcade II, did anyone win the auction for one on Yahoo last week? I tried to search through their past auctions to see how much it ended up going for but was unable to find it.
