Important note: This weeks competition is over. If you still wish to discuss Stampede, then feel free to do so, but no further scores will be accepted. Thanks to everyone for all their contributions! Please join in on the latest High Score Club competition!

Grab your lasso and get ready to rope in some heifers... but don't forget your lucky spurs, because this week's game is Stampede!

Game Information
Left Difficulty B / Novice: Long Rope
Right Difficulty N/A
Game Mode Game 4: Wrangler
Chosen By 128bytes

Post your scores right here in this thread, and I will add them to the list. Remember to play the game with the recommended game mode and difficulty settings as shown above so that your scores will be consistent with everyone elses. The deadline for posting scores will be approximately Sunday, July 11th at midnight (CST). In case you haven't already done so, please read the High Score Club rules. There is other useful information contained in that previous link, including a list of previous High Score Club games!

Unfortunately, you can't find a copy of the ROM at AtariAge's Profile Page for this game. But you CAN find such things as a typed copy of the manual, reviews, screenshots, and other information there.

If you are not a member of the High Score Club, but would like to be, then all you have to do is post a reply saying so, and I'll add you to the list!

Next week's game will be chosen by Kurushimi! Please send me a Private Message letting me know which game (and difficulty settings) you've chosen as soon as possible Kurushimi!

Scoring Points in Stampede - The score rolls over to zero every 10 thousand points and the game stops at the 10th rollover point, thus 99,999 is the max score

Hints and Tips
As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? Well no problem, because AtariAge has a scanned copy of the manual available online right over here.

What's that? You're too damn lazy to click that link? Well, here's what it has to say:
  • Dangers on the Trail: The cattle drives of the Old West had their share of hazards - and Stampede does too. Occasionally, you'll come upon an old bleached skull on the trail, and your horse will rear if you attempt to ride over it. If that happens, some of the dogies you are herding and roping could stray by, so look out and be prepared to ride around the skulls. There's also a Black Angus who pops up every now and then (worth 100 points if you rope him), and he can be a bum steer. Since he's sitting still and facing you - and can't be hered - he's tough to rope. Worse, if you bump into him, not only will he have strayed out of the herd, but your horse will rear, slowing you pursuit of other dogies.
[*]A Well-trained Horse: Your pony's no stranger to a roundup. When you throw your lasso, he won't move. This keeps you firmly in the saddle - but you can't change your mind and chase another dogie once you've decided to throw your rope.
[*]No Time Limit: You can keep on ridin' and ropin' as long as your "stray count" (the number on the left side of the screen) is 1 or more. The better you get at roping and herding dogies, the longer your roundup will last.
[*]Inceasing your Stray Allowance: After you reach 1000 pts., you'll notice your stray count will increase by one, giving you more of a chance to rope and ride. The number, however, will never get larger than 9.

Good luck everyone!

(the manual)
The dark red Hereford cows run the fastest, and help 'clog up' lanes to allow you to focus on picking off the slower or stationary cattle which show up in the other lanes. When things really speed up, I usually keep only one lane free of Herefords, since on the random games, such as game 4, the Black Angus cows can arrive on multiple lanes at the same time. (128bytes)
When a decent group of calfs show up on the screen, keep bumping them in front of you rather than lassoing (?sp) them. This will limit the number of new calfs showing up on the screen and will help control the tempo of the game. You can then concentrate on lassoing the new calfs that enter the screen and rack up the points. (sku_u)
Get used to knowing how far your lasso actually travells, if you throw and miss, you're stuck there unable to move, which really wastes time. (Ze_ro)
Other than leaving the red cows in every lane except one(preferably in the middle), try to keep them staggered like steps from the top to the bottom or from the bottom to the top. This will give you more time to get to them so you can push them forward with your horse. Just rope the ones that mess up your pattern and the ones in the open lane. (jedijeff)
The key in this game is in grouping your cattle, you either work in pairs or triples which ever is easier for you to maintain. Always remember they cycle thru thier colors after 3 waves from lite , To tan, To dark. Once you go thru your cycle of colors the steer head appears and ususally after wards so does the Angus sometimes in multiples. The grouping method works the best if you are good at doing the two pair method you can jump up to the three grouping method it works the same. For novice players stick to the TWO pair roping method and when the other rows of cows get closer just bump them so you can maintain your cycle of the cows that you are roping. Once you cycle thru your colors just reverse your method from the top Two/Three rows then to the Bottom and so on to the middle since you have to work your cows in groups its easier to work whats best for you.You can only have a max number of reserve men and that number is 9 so use your men wisely especially on the harder waves maximize your mans death so a reserve man is near in your points if you loose a man.Don't panic of you do loose a man because the main idea of how this game is played is endurance keep attentive to your grouping method if you let one angus pass by and you loose a man its better then loosing all of your reserve men bacuase of a whole ROW of cows slipping by. (ToddRogers)
You can "cycle" through the rows so that you only have to watch one row at a time for new animals. Get the screen so that all rows are filled with the slowest-approaching type. Now start at the top, and just lasso every new animal until another slow approacher appears. Now drop down to the next row. Just go through them one at a time like this.

While you're doing this, just herd the other rows as they get close to the border. You can often draw an invisible line in your head through the front-most cows, knowing in advance which order you'll have to herd them to return most quickly to your current vacant row.

Finally, if you ever have a choice between herding/lassoing an easier animal and a black angus, go for the black angus. This seems obvious, but it's harder to put into practice when you're in a panic about seeing two animals about to escape; so just be conscious of it. (Chris++)
Go for the dogies that are closest to you because if you don't you pass them up and that will cut your score down (if pass up three thats the end of the game) (Dan Iacovelli)
When herding the cattle to push them forward, go from TOP to BOTTOM.

In other words, if the cattle at the top of the screen are getting close to passing and if there are also cattle on the bottom ready to pass, always get the top ones first. You will always have a little more time to herd the bottom ones because your horse's hind legs kick back further and can touch the cattle, bringing them back to the front. (the 5th ghost)
Make good choices in rope'n.

Sometimes I like to bump a row of 3 cattle and lasso them as they run away from me. But, if you lasso the one closest to you, the front cattle will stop once it reaches the end of the screen. Instead, try to pick off the lead cattle (furthest from you in the row) so that the other cattle have to travel further to reach the end of the screen, thus buying yourself more time to tend to the others. (the 5th ghost)
Which Black Angus?

Often during the game, more than one Black Angus will appear (I once had 3 on the screen at the same time!) Depending on where they are positioned, it is usually better to go for the lower one first, then up to rope the higher one. You can lasso any cattle even if it is right above you, as long as your rope is touching it and you hit the fire button in time. The cattle below you, you need more space between you in order to rope them. Also remember that they can appear after clearing the dark brown, medium brown and light brown cattle, so be alert! The most I had come in a row were four Black Angus' so watch for more than one to appear! (the 5th ghost)
I try to alternate between clearing the top 3 rows, then working on the botton three rows. But once the speed really kicks in, it's all by the seat of my saddle :D

Oh, and I always start off the same.

I get the two light browns at the bottom first, then straight up to rope the medium brown one (2nd row from top). Then 3 single medium browns will occupy the bottom three rows, I wait till they're close and then quickly rope all 3, after which those bottom 3 rows will be occupied by 3 single dark browns.

By then, there should also be 3 single dark browns in the top 3 rows so I go up, wait till they're all close, then rope all 3 as quick as possible. After that, sometimes a few Black Angus's will appear, sometimes more medium browns, it seems pretty random. (the 5th ghost)
At the start I clear out all of the cows except the dark red ones. The game will fill in the slots with dark red anyways.

This game is all about control and rhythm. Since I suck I usually stick to keeping one lane clear and the rest filled. Just make sure when you clear a lane that you have enough time to get back to that lane if you need to move out and herd the other lanes. If this means herding the cows in the clear lane, then by all means do it.

I usually pick the third lane from the top as my herding lane. Never use the top or the bottom. (Shannon)

The black calfs, although stationary, are worth the most points. Make sure you grab them as soon as you can.

Uh oh. Multiple stationary black calves...

I'm in trouble now.

I used to hate this game, but after playing it on my intellivision I found that it's quite addicting.

I still need to try out reactor sometime. Completely missed out on the HSC for that.

Holy smokes!

You can rack up that score in only 24 mins? Amazing!

Myself, I always struggled at this game but my older brother is excellent at it :)

I had some free time this morning, but all I could manage was 1634. I'll have to try out sku_u's trick and see if I can improve that.

Here's a tip of my own: Get used to knowing how far your lasso actually travells, if you throw and miss, you're stuck there unable to move, which really wastes time.

Well my game was not as impressive in time relivance compaired to SKU_U but i attained 99,999 in 1 hr and 16 minutes. Just how the heck SKU_U did you do manage to pull off such a score in such a remarkable time. I'm not worthy, Please let us know your technique, you did tape your accomplishment didn't you because then i can up load your new world record to the TwinGalaxies data base. Do you achieve this kind of score on a regular basis on this game?

Probably because Zero posted the new game at 7:44 and you posted your score at 8:08. I always thought we had to wait until the new game was posted before we started playing. :ponder: I guess sku_u is psychic.

Probably my favorite Activision game. Thanks for picking this one! Now prepare to die.

(Well, everyone except Mr. 99,999 over there.)

I'll post my first score tomorrow. In the meantime, here are a couple of tips:

No, I'm not, I put the game on as soon as he posted it because I was already online and had the game in front of me. Since some here seem to be taking this whole thing way too seriously and since this whole thing has now ceased to be fun, Zero, you can take down all my scores as I'm no longer interested in taking part in this club.

Greetings All

Well there is another alternative to ducking and since SKU_U says he did his score all he would have to do is send me the video taped game as Proof and i'm sure since he's done it once he can do it again "The 99,999" that is if he didnt tape it the first time he played and then this matter will be resolved. So lets keep up the fun gaming after all thats why we are all here is to have fun.

Yes, I probably could, but I have better things to do. I'm taking classes and start tomorrow for one. Hmm, I didn't realize the high score club= Twin Galaxies. Interesting... Later all, have a great summer!
