High Score Club Week 18: Tron Deadly Discs

You have emerged into a large, open area. You look around and see nothing but solid walls, and your entrance has disappeared. Suddenly, a door opens behind you and a warrior emerges! You hurl your disc at him and watch him de-rezz before your eyes. Before you can react, another disc flies just past your head! You turn around, but two warriors are upon you! You have no choice but to dash into the door left by the first warrior! You must stay alive as long as possible, because this week's game is Tron: Deadly Discs!

Hints and Tips
As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? Well no problem, because AtariAge has a typed copy of the manual available online right over here.

What's that? You're too damn lazy to click that link? Well, here's the hints that it give (along with some corrections to the spelling!):
  • Keep TRON on the run! A moment's hesistation may cost him his life! Dodge incoming discs while trying to hit as many warriors as posible.
    [*]Be careful in the corners. It's easy to get trapped there!
    [*]Lock as many doors open as you can. "Teleport" to escape being hit or to surprise your attackers.
    [*]When "teleporting" TRON, think ahead and watch out! Don't run smack into a warrior or group of warriors on the other side. That could prove deadly!

Remember that you can call your disc to return to you if you hit the button again... so if you made a bad throw and it's obvious you're going to miss, call your disc back as soon as possible since you're quite vulnerable without it! (Ze_ro)
Some hints:
  • Between waves, move back to the center of the screen. This is the safest place to be, and will give you more maneuvering room when the warriors show up. Try to make sure you shoot all the doors to keep them open.
    [*]Once the three warriors come out, take your time to get in the proper position. If you do things right, you can often take out two warriors with a single shot... that will save you some time later on. Your best bet is to try to kill all three warriors as quickly as possible before replacements show up.
    [*]Don't worry too much if you get hit once during a wave, since clearing the warriors will give you back a hit point... however, getting hit more than once will put you in a hole that might be hard to get out of later on.
    [*]If you have to retreat from the warriors, try to make sure you're backing up towards an open door so you can escape in a pinch!
    [*]Don't worry about "using up" teleports... if all three warriors are coming towards you, don't be afraid to jump in a teleporter and turn the tables on them. The doors open fairly often, so take advantage of them.
    [*]Once you get to the gold warriors, the game is as difficult as it's going to get I'm afraid.... so once you can manage to complete this wave without taking a hit, you're really only an hour or two away from rolling the score. In fact, I'd be surprised if I don't see at least 2 or 3 people roll the score for this one.

On the first wave, move your player immediatly after pressing the reset button : the enemies will appear but won't move for 1 - 2 seconds (but be careful they can fire), so you can use this time to position yourself at a strategic place (to anticipate their moves) and destroy 1 - 2 of them quickly. :) (khryssun)
After killing an enemy, you'll have a little period of time before another one appears : this period correspond exactly with one try for you to fire : if you miss your target another enemy will appear, if you kill it you'll have another same period of time to have another try to shoot again (and no new ennemy will appear) and so on..., so anticipate the ennemies moves to shoot them one after another without missing them... you'll finish each wave quickly :) (khryssun)

You sure that you're playing on difficutly A? Because my 2nd try and I got that high of score, but when i changed it to A, it reduced to like 400 points... yeah.

 

Yes, I played with Dif A - In z26 I hit F6 which sets P0 to Dif A according to the text.

This is actually a personal favorite of mine... I used to play it quite a bit, but it's actually be a while since I last gave it a run. After a couple of games to get used to the speed, I managed to run off a score of 49,535. Here's some hints:

  • Between waves, move back to the center of the screen. This is the safest place to be, and will give you more maneuvering room when the warriors show up. Try to make sure you shoot all the doors to keep them open.

Yeah for some reason the first time I played I scored pretty high, but then when I started over again my score dropped significantly.  This was on an emulator.

 

Makes me wonder if there is some kind of quirk.

 

Shannon - You have to reset the game and then press F6 - for some reason z26 autostarts and the F6 switch doesnt come into play for that game.

 

That was my initial experience - I always test games like this since z26 doesnt give you an indication where the Diff switch is.

Interesting.... The emulator I'm playing is on the Xbox, but it is a PORT of Z26... :D
