moycon
What with Halloween coming up soon. Figured I start a topic on SCARY atari games. Not just listing em all, but which ones are your favorite and why? For me it's easy. When I was still in my early teens the inside back cover of Fangoria #25 had a listing for 2 new games from Wizard. I was freaked when I saw an Atari game called .... Halloween. Of course I didnt have the $50 they were asking for the game...So I had to wait till I established myself. Years later I bought a copy without intructions for $80. I'd have to say thats my favorite still. There's something SOO cool about flicking on the old Atari and hearing that freaky music.
Joel D. Park
I have to agree. Even though I'm still trying to get a real copy of Halloween. I have played it quite a bit. I love the music and the morbidness of it.

Tempest
That tune at the begining of Pac-Man is pretty scary. Tempest
StanJr
I think its scary that they bothered to make Sneak n Peek in the first place. I still jump when the monsters show up in Haunted House. The flashing lightning and thunder get me every time! Spooked Stan boo
Ze_ro
I imagine E.T. is the cause for many of the mental patients in asylums today: "Pits! Pits!! I keep falling in pits! Why the hell can't I get out?!?!". E.T. is a pretty scary game after all. --Zero
Jess Ragan
I'd say Adventure. Sometimes the dragons would just pop out of nowhere after the bat took your sword, or you had to drop it to carry around something else, and they'd gulp you down without giving you a chance to do anything about it. Or you'd run away from the dragons and after you put several screens' worth of distance between you, you'd still be all jumpy and worried that they were lurking somewhere, just dying to stuff you into their transparent bellies. The Night Phantom
While I recognize that Moycon was looking for more than lists in this topic, it might be helpful to establish a list of horror-themed games for the VCS. Here's what I came up with: Dark Chambers Frankenstein's Monster Ghost Manor Halloween Haunted House The Texas Chainsaw Massacre I've played all of these. The only ones I would deem scary are Halloween and Haunted House, both of which can startle with the sudden appearance of a menacing character. Frankenstein's Monster deserves a special mention for its Halloween-appropriate atmosphere.

And that one sure as hell has scared me in the middle of the night, with the lights off and the sudden flash of lighting and thunder. ..Al
moycon
When I started the topic I wasnt thinking of games like adventure and Tunnel Runner. ..but now that I think back youre right!! I can remember honestly being scared as Im moving around, all quiet like in Adventure, and all of a sudden this big ass dragon is trying to munch down on me....Or booking it down the tunnel as fast as I can, not knowing where I was going, because I turned the corner in Tunnel Runner and that music started blaring!! Ekkkkk!!!

Atari-Jess
I like ghost manor and I think its a really high quality game with full difficulty settings and the option to choose a male or female sprite to play as! with all the screens and things to do, who really doesn't admire what the programmers at xonox did with this game?! moycon
Yeah and don't forget that huge guy on the 2nd screen the sound his ax makes when it hits the ground....*shudder*
Joel D. Park
Don't forget about Frankenstein. It's fantastic once the monter gets all enraged and comes charging tward you on the screen. I've always been impressed by this DataAge game, every once in a while I play just to see the monster.

Here's what I came up with: Dark Chambers Frankenstein's Monster Ghost Manor Halloween Haunted House The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The latest “issue” (#50) of Retrogaming Times features an article that reviews several Halloween-type video games for the Atari 2600. The article covers everything in my above list except Dark Chambers and additionally covers two more: The Blair Witch Project, a graphics hack of Haunted House available from Hozer Video; and Ghostbusters, which didn't cross my mind probably because A) I've never played it and B) the film it's based on is in my mind a comedy, not a horror movie. The Retrogaming Times reviews are concise and engaging. For those interested, the article also provides a link to the author's Web site; there, one can find an expanded Halloween section covering other game systems (there really are some!!), as well as other game reviews.
