High Score Club Week 22: The Official Frogger

Important note: This weeks competition is over. If you still wish to discuss this game, then feel free to do so, but no further scores will be accepted. Thanks to everyone for all their contributions! Please join in on the latest High Score Club competition!

Oh no! Somehow, you've gotten lost! Your home is on the other side of a dangerous highway and a crocodile infester river! It's time to take a hop, skip and a jump and try to get back, because this week's game is The Official Frogger!

READ THIS: Please note that this is NOT the Frogger that was released by Parker Bros! "The Official Frogger" was a game released by Starpath that came on cassette for the Supercharger accessory. I can't guarantee that this game and the Parker Bros cartridge play and score the same, so please only submit scores from the Starpath version of the game!

Game Information
Left Difficulty A/Expert - Edge of screen is fatal for Player 1
Right Difficulty N/A in a 1 player game

Post your scores right here in this thread, and I will add them to the list. Remember to play the game with the recommended game mode and difficulty settings as shown above so that your scores will be consistent with everyone elses. The deadline for posting scores will be approximately Sunday, September 5th at midnight (CST). In case you haven't already done so, please read the High Score Club rules. There is other useful information contained in that previous link, including a list of previous High Score Club games!

Unfortunately, AtariAge doesn't host any of the Supercharger games, so the AtariAge Profile Page for this game wont have it. You can, however, find such things as a typed copy of the manual, reviews, screenshots, and other information there. If you need the ROM to play the game in an emulator, you might find something interesting at my web page... There's a link to it at the very, very bottom of this post.

If you are not a member of the High Score Club, but would like to be, then all you have to do is post a reply saying so, and I'll add you to the list!

Next week's game will be chosen by LarcenTyler! Please send me a Private Message letting me know which game (and difficulty settings) you've chosen as soon as possible LarcenTyler!

Scoring Points in The Official FroggerEach safe leap forward on the highway or river is worth 10 points.
[*]Going back and forth will not add points.
[*]Filling all five frog bays (completing a wave) gives you 1000 extra points.
[*]If you carry the lady frog home, you will receive 200 bonus points.
[*]Catching a fly will give you 200 more bonus points.
[*]You will get an extra life when you reach 20,000 points.
  • - Unknown, let us know if you can do it!

Hints and Tips
As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? Well no problem, because AtariAge has a scanned copy of the manual available online right over here.

What's that? You're too damn lazy to click that link? Well, here's the hints that it give:
  • If the lady frog is too far away, it may not pay to use the time to try for the 200 bonus points.
[*]The backs of the crocodiles can be used for travel, but stay away from their mouths.
    (the manual)
The Snake is only deadly around his mouth, landing on his tail is safe. Same with the Crocodile. Oh yeah, its safe to land in a pad up on top when the alligator is "almost there" but not covering the end the whole way. (keilbaca)
Here's some tips:
  • Be very aware of the speed of the traffic. There seems to be two different speeds, and I'm not sure what causes it to change speed, but at the higher speed, the second-last row of cars is VERY tough to avoid. Don't even enter this row until there is a clear path through it (ie, there's a break in the trucks), and make sure you leave it quickly. A good joystick is very helpful here since you need to tap up twice in succession... My trusty Gemini controller, for example, has a very soft feel to it, so it gave me a lot of troubles here... so I switched to an Epyx 500XJ and it worked much better. A general tip of mine for any game is to make sure you have the right controller for the right game... some are better suited to certain games than others.
[*]The second lane in the water always has three logs in it (I think the middle one disappears later on), and the lady frog is ALWAYS on the leftmost log. Keep this in mind when you approach so you can predict when the lady frog will show up, and so you know if you have time to grab it.
[*]On the flip side of things, getting the fly seems to be mostly luck. When the fly shows up, you really don't have a lot of time to get to it, because it'll almost certainly be gone by the time you get there. If it shows up in a good spot, then great... but otherwise don't beat your brains out trying to get to it, because you'll likely just make a mistake and die.
[*]Here's an excerpt from "How To Win At Video Games (George Sullivan, 1982):
  • Of the five docks, the most difficult one to enter is the one on the extreme left. The frog must be maneuvered to the left of the dock in order to be able to jump into it, but there are few opportunities to do this.

The trick is to put the frog aboard a turtle in the second row from the top and ride it to the left. Then, just before reaching the the edge fo the screen, jump onto a  log and then quickly into the dock.

If you're guilty of a misjudgement and no log appears, simply jump back onto a log moving to the right to avoid a collision with the edge of the screen. Then try again.

The speed of the traffic changes as the songs cycle through. (sku_u)
On some of the later levels, the snake moves extremely fast and you will have to jump straight from the truck lane to the first row of turtles.

As you get further in the game, the biggest challenge becomes how incredibly slow some of the logs are. You'll also notice that the speed will change several times per level (which makes sense given what sku said and that you are using up all your time with each frog).

One tip for anyone who might be feeling frustrated with level 5. Once you pass level 5, it cycles through the same 5 screens (with the addition of the snake and otter). That means that it gets much easier again (plus you will typically break 20,000 when you beat level 5 which gives you an extra life). I find that level 5 is the hardest level until you get to level 15 (which I have yet to beat). (Keir)

Tips:

There really isn't that many tips to this game, its pretty straightforward, just watch the cars, watch the animals (snake, alligator, etc), and especially watch out for the disappearing lillypads (my leading cause of death so far).

At first I was excited to see this weeks HSC game since I actually have frogger. :)

But then I read the post.

'please only submit scores from the Starpath version of the game!'-Zero

Heaven forbid it should be the version of the game I actually have. :P

I think this should be renamed the Emulator club. :lolblue:

This is actually one of the few weeks I used the real deal ;)

Dammit! I love Frogger but I'm off to Toronto tomorrow so I probably won't get much of a chance to play this week. :x

Oh well, had a couple of games and got a score of 10250.

I'll be lugging my laptop along with me, so I might get a chance to improve my score if I get some free time (I hope so - Frogger is one of my favourite games).

My issue with this game is that what if people don't have a Supercharger? Is the ROM available elsewhere on the web and is it playable using Z26?

I do have a supercharger but I don't have Frogger nor do I know how to make it work.

The rom is already posted in this thread, and it is playable on z26

You could just hook your supercharger to your computer's audio out and play the .wav file that keilbaca posted. :)

Frog guts all over those last two lanes of highway.

I also hate the first home base on the left.

I swear that those 2 places are the only place I die.

(Unless I forget about that damn snake !)
