I love reading people's top tens; this is my goto post when I'm looking for something new to play

One thing that shows is up in the list is that common games rise to the top, since most people are voting based on their childhood collections or their current collections. Not many people have the carts or time to try out every game, and so a lot of rarer and less played gems get unfairly low places. We end up with a "favourite" list - but if we accounted for voters' playing experience we'd get closer to a "best" list.

Points received by a rarer game are worth more since a smaller proportion of people has played it, and vice versa for very common games. We can use rarity as a proxy for the likelihood that the average voter has played a game. So a simple way to adjust the list is to multiply a game's score by its rarity - the resulting score should be a better marker of quality than popularity.

I decided to see what this adjusted list would look like, so here goes (in a smaller font so no-one mistakes it for the official list):

Some interesting points:

  • Superior sequels now rank higher than their more common prequels: Pitfall II, Defender II, Jr. Pac-Man and Millipede overtake their predecessors (this seems right to me).
  • Star Wars Arcade now just pips The Empire Strikes Back as the best SW game (they are hard to split, as a recent poll showed).
  • Quadrun, Crazy Climber and Halloween burst into the top 100 because of rarity (and I haven't played any of them, so now I will).
  • H.E.R.O. and Pitfall II battle closely for top spot, with clear air beneath them.
  • Mostly Atari and Activision games fall out of the top 100, and more 3rd party publishers enter it.
  • Frostbite, Tapper, Beamrider, and Montezuma's Revenge all race forward to the edges of the top 10 (well justified!).
  • E.T. falls in to the pit and waits to be dug up again (slipping from 70 to 143). No amount of Reese's Pieces will fix it...

That was very interesting, dark-aleph. Thanks for doing this. I think your list is definitely more accurate in determining the best games. One thing I've noticed compiling the lists is that many who post their lists have very few comments in this forum which leads me to believe a lot of the participants are casual fans of Atari and are only familiar with a few of the more popular games.

Cool, I generally agree with the adjusted rankings - very interesting.

It would be interesting to see a ranking of only the rarity 1 games to see a sort of opposite list.  Of those most common games, how do people rank them.

Wow, great list! This really feels more like a "best games" list rather than a "most popular games" list. Frostbite and Tapper are definitely deserving of their spots in the top 10.

The adjusted rankings are an interesting idea and the current list definitely is a good start, but I see room for improvement.

Multiplying the points with the AA rarity is too simple. If the AA rarity scale would e.g. be from 1..20 or 1..5, the results would be different. So the factor should be based on something less random.

One idea would be the sales, I know the AA rarity is somehow aligned to it. But are those really relevant? What determines the votes? The availability back then or today? For the latter, the original sales (and the AA rarity) are irrelevant, I suppose the original points could be taken 1:1 then.

If it is the former, then we have to calculate the chances of someone owning a cart back then. The rarities are an indicator for sure here. But then we need the absolute sales numbers. E.g. for a game selling 100,000 copies, the chances of owning it back then are 10 times higher than for a game selling 10,000 copies. Should we multiply the points with 10 then? And how do we know the sales?

That's a good point about the arbitrariness of the rarity scale. The upper limit of 10 as a multiplier produces results that seem intuitively right to me, with very rare games like Crazy Climber finding positions that seem pretty accurate, and excellent moderately rare games like Montezuma's Revenge getting justly rewarded. But it's a hot mess for the lower rarities, with the difference between a 1, 2, or 3 having a huge effect on rankings that doesn't seem to have any real world meaning. The rarity system is far too discrete at that level and needs greater granularity.

Sales figures would be a great way to fix that problem. The complete lack of any reliable sales figures is yet again an annoying feature of VCS history. Pac-Man and Video Pinball are both rarity 1, but Wikipedia says Pac-Man sold ~7m copies while Video Pinball didn't make 1m (I'd doubt it got half way there!): yet both receive the same multiplier penalty in my system. In the other direction, Pitfall! sold ~4m and is the 2nd bestseller, but is rarity 2: it receives a massive advantage. Surely the availability back then and the availability now don't vary as much as these two examples suggest?

Ultimately, the data set I would want is top 10 lists by people who also share their collection list. The rarity multiplier could then be directly derived from the voting pool. Though even then, mega-collectors, Harmony-carters, and emulator-completists would have to reveal which games they've actually played properly and not just what they've got!

:) Well, I dont know. I think what's below, is the premise of the voting.

Here, everyone can vote their 10 favourite games to rank them on a big list. The first game on the list will receive 10 points, the second one 9, and so on. Every 5 or 6 votes I´ll do an update of the list.

You could make whatever receive 10 points, 9 points and so forth. That "whatever" being an old time classic, a more exotic or unknown game. ;)

Changing the results to get more in line with some slightly different point is ... Well, statistics are statistics. ;)

A few weeks ago I assigned the release year to each of the games, and made a Top10 for each year. I wanted to see how well "my games" did. My active years was 1979 to 1983, and I think only Atari releases were available at the bookstore (big mall (100+ stores)). Only late (1983) I picked up SpectraVision's Planet Patrol at another store.

I also "just" counted the number of releases per year and was somewhat surprised. The "popularity" of the system was concentrated on a very few years. The system may have continued to be "successful" for years to come, with price cuts and games bundled.

:)

Why stop at 1990? You should continue your list. :)

Yes, I should have. I think it simply stayed at a relatively low level compared to 1982/83. ;)

Pretty new to the system, so this will probably change. But for now I'd have my top 10 as...

1. Pitfall!

2. Dodge 'Em

Your #1 and #7 won't be counted as 1 is a homebrew and 7 is Supercharger cassette game. (I wish at least Supercharger games counted as they are Atari 2600 games I bought before the crash in 1984. )

Not sure why they wouldn't be, according to the op as follows:

As I said on the other topic, I think it would be interesting to make a top 100 games for the system. It´s been done on other sites, but they have dissapeared or were done by few people.

Here, everyone can vote their 10 favourite games to rank them on a big list. The first game on the list will receive 10 points, the second one 9, and so on. Every 5 or 6 votes I´ll do an update of the list.

I hope that people like the idea and starts voting. This could be an important reference to know wich games are must haves!

You can:
-Vote for up to 10 original cartridge games and/or
-Vote for up to 5 Super Charger games and/or
-Vote for up to 5 homebrews.
....

That was posted 12 years ago when they were first brainstorming the list. A few posts down, they decided to include separate lists for homebrews and superchargers. Later, I think they stopped doing that. When I took over the compiling, I decided to not count them at all as most did not include them and, when it comes to homebrews, older ones would get more votes than later ones which weren't around at the time of voting and skew the totals.

I'll admit that my collection is rather small, so this "top ten" is effectively half of my total library...nevertheless, I posit:

  1. Asteroids
  2. Robot Tank
  3. Yar's Revenge
  4. Berserk
  5. Space Invaders
  6. Missile Command
  7. Solaris
  8. Megamania
  9. Joust
  10. Dark Cavern

I can't believe how low (138) Night Driver is!

.. The rarity-weighted ranking is interesting, but I really disagree with the method, (and see no possibility for a really good method either). Particularly in this venue, the famously rare ones are arguably more "popular" as a result of their known "rarity". In other words these games HAVE ACHIEVED CULT STATUS and I do not see how that would classify as a disadvantage in polling. Emulators and flash carts make all of this software accessible to anyone.

I would say that H.E.R.O. really very solidly qualifies as a COMMON game in this respect.
