how do you load up an atari 800 game?

99% of the time you:

1. Turn on the drive and insert the disk.

2. Hold down OPTION and turn on the computer.

3. Release OPTION once the loading starts and wait.

(OPTION disables the built-in BASIC which interferes with most games)

Man...that game really turned me on...

I even 'hacked' the game by renaming the image filenames so I could finally see the naked chick ;)

what about loading up games where there are several games on one disk?

If there's no DOS or bootmenu on the disk, you'll need to load up a DOS first, then load the game you want. 1st, put in the disk and try the boot procedure I spoke of before. If you only see:

BOOT ERROR

BOOT ERROR

BOOT ERROR

then you need to boot DOS from a separate disk, then you can get a DIRECTORY listing and LOAD the game you want. Using Atari's DOS 2.x, "A",ENTER,ENTER would get you a directory, and "L", ENTER,filename would load the file you want.

You can get boot menu programs to make all your multi-game disks menu driven for easy access.

Not sure how you got these discs, but usually if they were "game discs" they had a small menu system that booted just like the full games. The best ones (IMHO) booted in a second or so and you simply typed the letter or number of the game you wanted. That's why I was always already playing the game I wanted when my cousin was still halfway typing LOAD "*",8,1

That and the slooooooooow 1541 (before there were Power cartridges....but then we got Happy's....o well, drifting off).

Since someone already necrobumped this thread, which by the way when we are talking 30+ year old machines seems not all that terrible....

I just wanted to say that my copy of Strip Poker on the 8bit was already 'hacked' when we got it so that they put clothes on when we won... I fixed it and gave a copy to a friend of mine at the time... who's mother had found out he had it, and wouldn't let him play past the panties and bra... so I showed him the trick so he could see naked 8bit goodness... ah, the silliness of being of middle school age and corupting other kids my age.

This is the sanctuary of the Atari gods. Let's not defile it with talk of the evil "C" word. I'm not a fan of "C: either.

Only an Atarian would understand that last part.

Only infidels would type something as awful as LOAD "*",8,1. What sacrilege.

:)

Haha, I remember seeing my buddy's C64 for the first time and had to ask him what that loading nonsense was. I never understood how the Commie could out sell the Atari 8bits.

LOL, at the time we barely knew what to look for in a computer, and "Do we have to type a command to load games?" is not something that crossed our minds when buying one :D

ok your responces explain it all!!!!!! i looked on the back of the mouse and it sais commodore on it! icon_smile.gif thanks again!

There's a chance a Commodore mouse could work since they used the same joystick port Atari did.

But PC serial mice have the same 9-pin connector, but I don't think they could ever be made to work without a proper serial port.

As others have said, Atari 8-bit software that can use a mouse is rare, so not much point in trying :)
