What do you do at a classic gaming convention?

I am trying to work Philly Classic into my schedule (it falls right after my final exams). I have never been to a classic gaming convention. It sounds great, but just some details on what you do. Can you play classic arcade games or set-up consoles? How much do they cost? I know people sell stuff, but do they buy and trade? Do they only buy and trade really rare items; could you bring extras of things like Superchargers or rarity 3 games to but or trade? Are prices like the DP guide, Ebay, ? It would be worth it to just see all the mountains of games and relive some good memories, but just wondering what else goes on? Auctions? Speeches? Thanks -- RG

RG,

If you can at all fit it into your schedule, go for it. Imagine a room full of cool folks, good prices, insanely rare games (like a sealed Crazy Climber?) all in one place. Last year, Jeff brought about 20 arcades, and I brought about 6. Curt brought his Cosmos, and yes, you could play it. There were two Adventurevisions, tons of Vectrex (I got mine for 40 bucks!), 2600 out the wazoo, Coleco, Jag, TG16 (No Neo Geo, but when I said I would sell mine, there were some bright eyes!) and more than any one person can comprehend.

Imagine your collection, whoever you are, and times it by how many ever people are there. Way cool, way fun.

As for lectures, that seems to be a CGE thing. However, there was a bar at Philly, that was nice! Of course, if you want an earful of how to fix old broken games, I will be glad to tell you how........

I've not been to any beyond the Cinciclassic, but if it was any indication of what is in store for Philly, I am charged. Its just a bunch of people who love classic games hanging out, playing games, buying, selling, you know.

Its GREAT!

See ya in Philly (assuming I can get off work!)

i went to the convention in francfort this year and it was great.

the best of all was meeting the people you trade with for a long time ..... i'm surprised that nobody mentions this. maybe it a little because we're in europe, so people come from various countries, what makes it much more international ...

and also the public was very open for any systems, so i could get rid of some items that i thought i would have to keep for ever like my sinclair zx computer and some other actually non-videogame related stuff

i also bought so very nice stuff, and also some very cheap stuff. i won't forget that box really full of nice catalogs, manuals and warraty cards. i grabbed a big bunch of stuff for a very good price. it was from the organiser of the meeting. thanx again

RangerG, if you get a chance to go to Philly, I'd say you won't regret it.

I dont' know if anyone else answered your question about trading only rare games. There are all kinds of Common and Rare stuff. If you need more common suff you'll have no problem finding what you need. Folks are always super friendly whether you are buying Rare or Common.

There are Free-Play arcade games, and consoles setup to play. And like Fish said you get to put a face on some of these folks you talk to every day but have never met.

Last year's Philly Classic I got my butt wooped at a game of 7800 Ball Blazer by Tempest. :-)

I say you hold a Southern convention named "Tech-Lanta 2K2". Maybe something in the fall, around elections or Columbus day. Summer is CGE, Spring is Philly, Fall is all of us talking on the internet.

It would take someone who lived there to talk to the hotel and establish a mail list for people who want to come. Charge 20 bucks a head to get in (to cover the cost of the room) and get an arcade operator to sponsor it and bring new games. I know there are several in Atlanta, and I know one personally in Tampa. It would not take much to do, and I know you could get people there. Remember Field of Dreams? "if you build it, they will come"......

CGE is at the Plaza hotel in Las Vegas off Fremont street (neat light show). Most folks arrive Friday and depart Sunday. I attened thhis year as a Twin Galaxies representative and it was fun. If you're looking to buy stuff or get your hands on some rare stuff that is the place to be. Don Bluth and a few other folk heros were there talking and the 'auction' was pretty fun also.
