Scott Stilphen
One version has 4 "markers" on the board, and the other does not. My Atari cart has the markers. Years ago I heard the Sears version was different that the Atari one, so the non-marker version may be that. I've never found the Sears cart to confirm this - can anyone? Tempest
Two versions do indeed exist. My text label Othello does not have the markers, but my picture label and Sears Othello do. What are those markers there for anyway? Tempest
liquid_sky
As far as I know, The marks are there just for looks. I have an old Othello board and it has them. For strategy, perhaps they can be used as waypoints, just like the notations on a chessboard. Im no othello expert though, but I do play quite a bit
Scott Stilphen
I know from playing that if you put a piece outside of the "box" (the markers being the corners), then your opponent most likely will take that piece and get to outside row first - an advantage to taking that side, and possibly one or both corners.
