bergbros
The question basically goes to what kind of collector you are. I always felt that the game was the thing and not the plastic that housed it. I really would take a rarity or protoype if the gameplay was particularly strong. Xenophobe, Miner 2049er, Klax, BMX Air Master come to mind. I would rather pay less and get Hozervideo to burn one for me than spend the big bucks on an original. As for the rest, I really do not want to spend ridiculous prices on some truly horrible games. I won't spend $50.00 on A Custers Revenge game that is offensive as well as bad. I saw Air Raid from Menavision on Stella and I could not believe how bad this game was. Spending $100 on a 2600 game especially one that was crummy like that seems to be excessive. I would be more interested in spending $3 on a loose Kaboom without instructions than a shrink wrapped Gauntlet game.
bergbros
Oh, I do have some rarities, but I bought them when they first came out. My list is as follows: Star Wars Arcade (Not a bad conversion) Montezumas Revenge (Like it) Crypts of Chaos (A bad game) Laser Gates ( I like this game although I was never able to finish it) Popeye Bump n" Jump Front Line Stategy X- Konami (I know some people think this game was good. I thought it was awful with crummy graphics) Mountain King (Not sure if it is rare however the best of the bunch) Stargate-Silver label( Much Superior to Defender). The rest are the Berzerks, Robot Tanks Pac-Mans of the world.
Adrian M
By any chance, do you have any Atari 5200 prototypes in your possession that you want to sell? I'll buy any if you do!
MattyXB
First I collect al games that I like, and all others if I get them cheap. By my favourite games I collect all Lable and Name Variants that I get. But I too collect Rare games and pay very much for them. Like WaterWorld (because is a adventure). Motorodeo have I get for a very good price last days, because this was an ebay action and the seller has not describe it. But there was a little picture and I have see that this was Motorodeo. Third I collect Prototypes. But these are most very hard to get and then only for a very high price. Fourth I have think about it to buy some of the Rarest game by Hozer (first Prototypes were are never release). But in the moment I wait a bit. Heh, I definitely would rather spend $3 on a shrinkwrapped 2600 Gauntlet (sorry, couldn't resist) Seriously, I can see what you mean, though I don't understand the dichotomizing nature of postings like these. Whether they promote one type of collecting or another, it's always to the detriment of the other. I don't see the point in that. Gamers vs collectors, fleamarketeers vs Ebayers, low-budget vs high budget. I know we're all seeking confirmation of our beliefs, but, in the end, let's not forget to just have fun Cheers, Marco

JCroniger
Most of the rare games I own or have played on an emulator aren't that great. I was dissapointed with Chase the Chuck Waggon. On the other hand, Tooth Protectors is pretty good.
atarimastermarty
I think that rarities and prototypes are part of collecting. The common games are fun to play. But on the other hand Rarities and Prototypes are what make a collection stand out. I think you'll find that most ebayers are just people who live around dry thrift shops. It pretty much depends on if youre a collector, or player, or both. I personally am both. But like Inky said In the end it's all about fun. Cassidy Nolen
I guess the same could be said for owning stand up arcades. I have a Computer Space that is worth a ton, but it does not see a tenth of the play that Neo Geo does. As for the rare carts in my 2600 collection, probably the same could be said. Its all about why you collect; bragging rights maybe? I think if you collect for playability, getting the grails should not be important. If you collect for completeness or oddities, then that would require you spending the bucks. I would say a third of the games I own I have simply to complete a part of my collection. The others are ones I love and do play. Have you ever tried to play Rubiks Cube? Really sucks. Cassidy
Adrian M
Cassidy, you touch on a good point. While I consider myself to be sort of a hybrid collector who collects both for playability and for the grails (or completedness). Whenever I obtain a hard to find item (or even common ones), I get the satisfaction of knowing that this item will have a permanent good home in my collection. I take really good care of my gaming collection. I've heard too many stories of people selling or throwing out their rare items on numerous occassions and thankfully that will NOT happen with my stuff. My favorite arcade which I frequent several times a year, Funspot in Weirs Beach, NH is now a full-fledged classic game museum/arcade where they follow a similar philosophy...they find rare coin-op games, restore them if necessary, and keep them permanently where they can be enjoyed by gamers. There's no danger of a rare coin-op game being gutted or trashed just because of a defect or because of its age. They even have a working- fully playable version of Atari's Breakout (among other rarities)...something I have never seen in an arcade before! I shudder to think at how many of these have been gutted back in the day simply because of how old they became.

jahfish
i think 90% of the rare titles also exist as similar remake from other companies, as pirates or even easier... as pal-version that are not (as) rare. that' an easy way to save a few bucks. so you don't need to ruin yourself on the first rare cart that appears. instead watch out for it, and grab it when you can get it cheap. there's no need to start a bidding war for waterworld, crazy climber or most other rare items. remember that patience is the collectors best friend .... quote: Originally posted by san-d-2000: Why not do both Cheers, Sandy. because you end up like me with no money left quote: Originally posted by Cassidy Have you ever tried to play Rubiks Cube?
